Ni 'd his farm papers Senator probably originated the Calf club g club ideas. Hed go into partners ..illi any farm boy whose parents would agree to look after the partnership, and hed lend the farm boy money to buy a pig or a calf, and the farm boy would feed it (on Dads grain and hay and pasture) and fatten it and sell it, and after paying back Senator rate of interest Capper at a business-lik- e hed find he still had a nice profit. And the farm boy would suddenly realize that there was big dough in this farming business, and hed decide to be a farmer, and hed always subscribe to the Daily Capital and the (upper farm magazines and papers and vote for Senator Capper (as soon as he turned 21). I think this was before the days of F. F. A. awd-4-when the rural youngsters got realistic and about twice as cognizant (which means hep) as their urban cousins. But that wasnt all Senator Capper did. Each year on his birthday he leased the big- gest amusement park in Topeka, and he ad- vertised in the Capital and the farm papers and magazines, and later over the radio, that every youngster in the whole state was invited to his birthday party.. Youd go to the park I think it was named Grants park, after another soldier line and get a and stand in a block-lon- g handful of tickets, and one was good for a ride on the if you could get on, and one was good for a Dixie cup of ice cream and a wooden spoon, if you didnt have waiting your turn in line, and the others were good for other things ordinarily priced at a nickel cash. You might say Senator Capper hand- il raised and his own consti- tuency, and that constituency has been big enough and loyal enough to return him to office with a big majority every eight years since Heck was a pup. Senator Capper liked to dance, too, ami he cut a frisky caper with the ladies right on up to and past the time he was 80 or 90 or so. And there were rumors that Senator Capper liked to pinch . , . no, this is about General Eisenhower, not Senator Capper. Id like to write an editorial all about Senator Capper as I knew him, sometime, but this isnt it. Well, then, when Clay was a school boy, playing all night .in a dance orchestra anil working all day on the school paper and an- other paper downtown, and cutting classes, he lived in an apartment or room which, as nearly as I can gather, was distinctly I5o- hemian in the more proper connotations of the word, with General Eisenhowers young- The way 1 get it, Milt or brother Milt. wasnt too flush, or else was spending his money on something else, so Clay was priv- ileged to pay the rent and Milt just sort of visited, daily and nightlv. So you see, Clay is practically you might say an old t' of Ceneral Eisentiow t r s, once removed but still in the family so to speak. Now ever since Clay first sacrificed his by accepting me as LK chore-boweve picked our candidates early. Way early. Sometimes our pick wouldnt get nominated, or cun mentioned in the convention. Those wirei the times we didnt remember a tiling. But when we happened to guess right, guess who was swinging on the big drum on the bandwagon? About a year befoie anyone evir started mentioning Wendell Willkie as a pr possible, we read about him sonic w lime in a very brief and inaccurate article that said he chewed tobacco, and we decided what this pres- country needed was a ident.
