Clint Butler, described as a frail little woman, has been presented a medal by the Commission on Cooperation, inscribed: Mrs. J. C. Butler. In defense of law and civilization. For notable service, April 18, 1931." ' On the date mentioned, Mrs. Butler was left in charge of the Jail atf Huntington, Tenn., by her husband, the sheriff of Carroll county, who had been called away for the night. In the jail was Joe Wauford, a negro, charged with killing an officer. Very shortly after dark, a mob appeared' and demanded the prisoner, but was refused by Mrs. Butler. When members of the mob tried to enter the jail, Mrs. Butler said: "If you come in here it will be over my dead body." After a consultation by the leaders, the mob dispersed, leaving the plucky woman as master of the situation. Impressive and largely attended funeral services were held Sunday at 1 p. m. at the ward chapel in Salt Lake City for N. J. Peterson, former Brigham man who died Thursday.
