Bruskness and brevity rthat is the general idea cf what constitutes a business communication. As far as it goes it is correct; but the bruskness must "go beyoud curtness and the brevity beyond ambiguity. A gracious word or two, or an explanatory clause, will often place in an entirely different light what otherwise might Impress the recipient as rudeness or obscurity. In order to avoid the latter possibility is best, before dictating an important letter, to make notes of the points to be covered, or even a rough draft of the entire letter. Clear thinking is absolutely essential to clear writing; and the average business man cannot think clearly while a typist sits chewing her stylus in uneasy anticipation of the next attack upon the paper. It is perhaps superfluous to state that a business letter calls for an immediate reply. If it is impossible to reply in full, send along an acknowledgement of the receipt and an assurance of early attention. When the reply is ready, make it clear and definite; arrange your statements in a systematic order. It is pleasing fact that the of business men are becoming as particular about tfieir writing paper as the daintiest debutantes. They want the best, the price is a secondary consideration. The use of cheap and nameless stock is supposed to have about the same effect upon the recipient, as if the writer were to make a personal call in a ragged coat and soiled linen. ANENT G AMELING. e. NEWS, THURSDAY, APRIL 26, 1906, present whereabouts are unknown, but it is known that he is a forger, a defaulter, an outcast and a fugitive, despised by the men who once held him in high esteem. And all this because Bowman saw, or thought he saw, the primrose path to easy street, by way cf bucket shop gambling. He was a young man possessed of many qualities that make for success; bright, capable, cf a good substantial family, influential in the local politics of his county, and possessing the confidence of his people to a marked degree. But this clever whom to nature and civ- -' man, young iliz&tion had keen so kind, and who combining his other good qualities with honesty and common sense, should have made a fine success, found the beaten path, the way of his fathers, too slow. The lure of the blind goddess turned his head; and the result was the Inevitable dishonesty, forgery, fraud, and then disgrace, outlawry. Everything that was worth while to Bowman friends, family, home, and the joy of living he left out there in Phillips county, and he can no more return to them than a dead man; not even so much, for the dead return in pleasant memories, if their lives have been worth while. And surely this is the general rule; no man is a successful gambler, or even makes a substantial fortune by gambling, whether he follows faro or the board of trade. And the honest gambler is, as a rule, a creation of western fiction; in real life you always cut the cards. Taken all in all, it is a career no man can afford. Logan Republican.
