Show PROSPECTIVE 0. S. L- - RAILROAD. party of officials of the Oregon Short Line and of tbe Utah Sugar company is now making a wagon trip . over the survey of the Malad Valley railroad, which is to be built this year. The party is made up of General V. II. lUncroft,- General Manager A - Superintendent E. E. Calvin, Division Superintendent J. II. Young and Resident Engineer William Ashton of the Oregon Short Line, Mosiah Evans of the Utah Sugar company,' who is manager of the Bear River Irrigation & Ogden Water Works company, and Superintendent Austin and Chief Engineer J. C. Whelan of the last named company. The party will make the trip from the Central Pacific over the entire survey to Malad city, Ida., carefully examining the survey before it is finally approved and a contract let for building the road. The proposed Malad Valley railroad leaves the present line of the Central pacific about three tuiles and a half test of Corinne, and goes north to Malad, a distance on an air line of about fifty miles. The railroad will be necessarily 6omewliat longer. The survey was made by Mr. Whelan. The railroad, which It is planned to have finished by fall, will tap an extraordinarily rich valley, and afford railroad facilities for one of the largest towns in the United States which Is without a railroad. The immediate reason for the building of the railroad is to haul the beets which will be wanted by the Utah Sugar company. It is stated that the sugai company has 800 acres of its own planted In beets, wtyile the farmers have 340 acres more. It Is estimated that there will be 15,000 tons of beets ready for shipment this fall, afford-i- n itself a nice revenue for the railroad. But the beets will not furnish the the new road. Malad hud a wide valley reputation as one of the garden spots of the west. Giains, hay, potatoes, vegetables of all kinds fruits and other praducts of the soil The grow in the greatest abundance. farmers have been handicapped by the lack of railroad facilities. Their products have been hauled to American Falls, Ida., or Collinston, Utah, for shipment, making the expense so great as to cut down heavily the profits or wipe them out altogether. With a railroad built to Malad, a stream of farm products and livestock will be flowing to the Salt Lake and other markets, and a reverse stream of merchandise and supplies will be going into the valley as it is built up ander the new conditions. Hello, Tom, in trouble again I Yes, this hill Is too steep, and I bent my rear forks. Well, push up, perhaps we can fix it so you can get back home, Alright, old man I (then turning to his companion). Say, Bill, how is it that Jim can rids up this hill with a 93 gear, when you and I have to hoof it with our 84 aua 91 gears, or bust pur machines in trying to ride np? 1 Oh his wheel is one of those Racycles with the chain and sprocket pall between the bearings. There is 27 per cent, less pressure on the bearings of his machine than there is on any other Bicycle, eg, of couxae, he can go up places we can't. I tell you what, Tom, When a fellow can save h of lu3 energy, it's an awful let, , Yon bet it is, but Gee Whack 1 look at the size of the sprockets. Oh ! Blame thi looks, just think how much less strain there is on his cltain by using larger sprockets, and then how much less compression there is on his rear forks. What have the sprockets get to do with the strain and compression? Why, everything. I saw a test made, showing the difference, and it was an eye opener. Take 64 gear, with its 24 and 8 sprockets, and put ISO pounds push on your pedal, and you - have a strain of ZG3 your -- n your 6 chain.
