Show BANKERS r lp IN BRIGHAM program consists of two business sessions banquet at commercial club ball at academy of music under the direction ot of the utah bankers association a regional convention contention ot of the bankers of 0 weber cache and dom box elder county Is being held in this city today with the box elder association in charge ot of the entertainment features the convention is largely attended a number of 0 the prominent bankers ot of the state being present including Al marriner arriner S eccles of ogden president ot of the state association carl marcusen ot of price state secretary seth bank commissioner of utah members of the executive committee and representatives senta tives ot of the various banks in this region including the wives ot 01 some of the visiting bankers regis te aeration ter atlon ration of those attending the convention bention took place this morning at the club rooms between and the program ot of the day includes a morning and afternoon atter noon business session luncheon at noon a banquet at 6 at the commercial club rooms and a ball in the evening at the academy ot of music the ladies Alin minstrel was repeated this afternoon for the benefit ot of the visitors and the old tolka folks ot of this community the convention opened at 10 at the commercial club rooms the meeting was called to order by president eccles and after the singing of america invocation was offered by rev C E fowler two solos were rendered by ed lee accompanied by mrs airs lee the address ot of welcome was delivered by attorney wm win J lowe in the absence ot of mayor knudson who is ill A response was made by thomas B D farr ot of the national bank ot of smithfield A splendid address was delivered by president Al marriner arriner S eccles in which ho he discussed the progress ot of banking irom from its earliest inception in this state down to the present time this is a day and age ot of organization he said and business has baa been organized into what we call big business we find all blasses working under an organized plan it seems to be a part ot of our present forward evolution he said bankers he said are not immune from the spirit of organization and they realize the advantage it gives them to be better able to function in their line of work to take advantage ot of this power given us through organization would be to default the very purpose tor for which we have been organized the organization itself he be said is merely a tool and after all it is a matter of individual effort the speaker stressed alie the seriousness ot of the position ol of bankers stating that they should not be mere money lenders and collectors of interest but real factors in the up building ot of the community when we are all our better selves he said we are ar not thinking of the interest we collect but the place we occupy in the scheme ot of things and the service we can render ile he urged all to keep in mind that the position we hold as bankers must be kept sacred as a means ot of service to our fellow men bank commissioner seth voiced his feelings as much in favor of regional conventions for at these gatherings he said gaid we are arc able to discuss matters of 0 local interest lie ile gave an able discussion of 0 the first principles of 0 banking he urged bankers not to place too high value on lands cattle sheep etc in the making of loans especially during times ot of inflated prices he encouraged the raising of 0 dairy cows by farmers and loped hoped the bankers would advise them to be more steady and not fly from one crop to another he pointed out the value ot of sugar beet culture to the farmers ot of utah mr air attributed the failure allure ot of many of the smaller banks to an attempt to foster large enterprises which were beyond their power to finance tl nance 0 W adams vice president ot of the utah state national bank at salt lake city was the concluding speaker at the morning session and gave an able address on new laws many topics ot of vital interest will be discussed at the afternoon session which convenes as we are going to press A further account ot of the convention will be given in our next issue IN |
