DUBLIN (UP) Smuggling either as a spare-timhobby or as a whole-timjob pays big dividends to some people living on both sides of the border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Although police in both Belfast and Dublin have organized racket-bustinsquads to deal with smugglers, the trade still pays a pretty penny for effort expended. Because prices are lower in the republic than across the border for such items as cigarettes, butter, fertilizers, pigs, eggs and cloth, these items form the bulk of the forbidden cargoes that cross the border nightly. It is estimated that 3,000,000 to 4,000,000 cigarettes valued at into are smuggled $100,000 Northren Ireland every month. A years work In cigarettes alone gives a tidy profit.
