Show VC SItyline Conference Swim Meet to be Held Here Bees Chances Utah U. Defending Champions Friday Defeat Seven College ' Seven Skyline conference uni- versities will take part in a swimming meet to be held Friday and Saturday at Intemoun-taischool pool, it was announced this week by Sid Farnsworth, president of the Quarterback club which is handling local arrangements. Swimming sessions will be held both afternoons starting at 3:00 oclock and each evening at 8 00 oclock when top college swimming stars from the Intermountain area will vie for conference titles. , V 3L ir if $S 3 4j4 , -s. Fifty-sevegames will be played over the five day period and a total of 320 players will see action. More than 12,000 players performed all over the nation on 1,200 teams, all seek ing tournament posts. The mamoth new field house court and a practice court at IBYU will be used to eliminate the teams on hand from Mexico, Canada, Washington, D. C San Francisco, Richland, Wash, and Wilmington, Calif., to mention only a few. 1953 Brigham Fourth ward, champions, failed to qualify for the tournament which means that a new champion will be crowned. University 1954 Swim Team defending Skyline champions who will appear in the conference meet at Intermountain school, Thursday, Friday and Saturday are, standing, left to right, Dee Stevenson, Jim Dunn, Lynn Spindler, Jerry Barnes, John Josephson, Von de Ogden, Keith Thompson and Coach Pete Carlson; kneeling, Jack Kobayoshi, Garlon Itoose, Ronald Tronier, Don Swenson, Captain Bill Wagner and Spike Conley. Participating will be swimming teams from the University of Utah, Utah State Agricultural Montana University, college, Colorado A and M, Denver university, Wyoming university and New Mexico university. Only Brigham Young university in the Skyline conference does not have a swimming team. club The local Quarterback will furnish some of the meet officials as well as gate attendants. Admission to each session will be 50 cents for aduls and 25 cents for students. Assisting with the arrange ments are Carlyle Baty, secre tary of the local club; Earl Madsen, chairman of the timing committee; and Dale Rasmussen who will act as referee. These and other club members who will assist in handling the event, will meet at 1:45 Friday afternoon to check assignments and get final instructions. Actually the conference will get under way on Thursday with the staging of the 1500 meter race in the Intermountain pool and possibly other long distance events. The more spectacular sprint races and diving exhibitions will be included on the Friday and Saturday programs, a complete schedule of which will he announced in the Journal, Friday. Seeded to win the conference title this year is the team from Denver university, headed by Don Brown who breaks a record nearly every time he gets into the, pool. The Utes will be defending conference champions but will be hard pressed to repeat because of the loss of several members from last years championship sguad, especially Roswell Seare who left to serve an LDS mission. Seare established several conference records last year. (Bill Wagner, captain of the 1954 Ute swimming team will spark the Utah university squad. Last year he placed second in the individual 100 yard backstroke and individual medley in the conference meet and was a member of the record breaking 440 yard free style relay team. This year, in a dual meet with Montana, he placed first in the 100 yard freestyle event.
