Petersen In First Ward , Just About ? start. good Ya Gotta Be A Man . Crompton ,K Football coaching is probably one of the riskiest of all professions. A coach just doesnt lose the majority of his games over more than a year or two and keep his job. Either he produces wins or finds a new job. A football coach, even when hes winning, often receives more criticism than a second-rat- e city councilman. It can be no other way for everyone has as many opinions about how to run a football team as they have on how to run a school district. That is what makes Earl Fergusons record at Box Elder high school phenominal. Now In 32nd Year Coach Ferguson is now into his 32nd year of Box Elder high school coaching and hes still a young man making him the dean of Utah high school coaches. Just remaining at one school as a coach for 32 years is something of a fete. But look at his record. Fergusons squads have won 18 region championships, four state championships and tied for a state championship. His power teams have ground out 4,232 points to their opponents 805. In conference competition Fergusons teams have won 149 or 82 percent of their games while losing 25 i n r t i t& By Bob FT jft ,,rt 4x Dealing with Ferguson is always a pleasure from the viewpoint of a newsman. Ask him a question, any question, and he answers it with his honest opinion even if he has to say "it looks bad for us this week (though that is seldom necessary). Watching Ferguson drill his squad, its obvious his practice field is no place for a sissy that needs coddling. Hes rough on his charges, but when they finish a season they can call themselves men. So here is a salute to Coach Ferguson who probably has the best, as well as the longest, football record in Utah ; to a coach who has helped make men out of a lot of boys.
