Just About JL AtUftttUUf By Bob Crompton Mulling over Governor Lees comment that We are in a bad way when the prisoners, no matter how right they may be, can tell us how to run our prison, Walt Bundy said Next thing you know theyll be organizing and forming a union. A fast moving rumor that Senator Arthur Watkins, sponsored and supported legislation to cut veterans benefits, passed through Box Elder county a while back. ' In correspondence to the Wednesday, Watkins emphatically denied this. Following is his statement: I have been beseiged with letters from people at home who in no uncertain terms criticize me for allegedly favoring legislation to reduce veterans benefits, particularly the benefits of disabled American veterans. Nothing could be further from the News-Journ- al truth. Several of my correspondents even criticized me for sponsoring legislation to this end. I have never sponsored such legisla- tion. The story had its beginning in a report issued by the Joint Congressional Committee on the Economic Report of 'which I am a - member. This report, in and of itself, did not contain any such recommendations. But Committee staff members, however, included in the APPENDIX of the report certain suggestions which did offer methods for reducing the costs of government. Apparently these proposals, which would cut veterans', benefits, originated with the Federal Tax Policy Committee. I am not a member of this Tax Policy Committee. As a matter of fact my views with re spect to Veterans legislation are directly even went so contrary to these proposals, far as to write separate views on the Committee report. In these views I limited my approval to the reports specific recommendations as they appeared in the report itself.' ; I want to, assure veterans that I do not favor any reduction of Veterans benefits, particularly those given to disabled veterans. I further want to assure veterans that the committee, to my knowledge, has never considered such suggestions, nor has it planned any such future study. Finally, I want to say that I have never sponsored such legislative proposals. I have served the people of Utah for four and one-hayears in the Senate. My entire record 13 one of support for sound veterans legislation. My record speaks for itself. - f s - lf Whenever a flock of people listen to leaders, without intelligently studying matters presented to them, they are dealing a death blow to the American way of life.
