In the Immediate area of Brigham City, therell be a fruit crop this summer. Yes, you heard It straight. Just as you guesswho ed, the calamity howlers and "experts washed out our crop, entirely, who wrote it off and buried all hopes, were wrong again. It has become commonplace, In fact, that the crop can stand at least lour complete killings and still come through." Were quoting Alf Olsen, for one. Im getting tired of the experts saying our fruit crop is lost, year after year, when it isnt, he said this week. He estimated there will be between 50,000 and 75,000 bushels of peaches harvested In Box Elder county this summer, If all of them are shipped, this will be as many peaches as were ship-peout of here last year. Of course the peaches wont all be shipped. The greatly reduced crop elsewhere (unless the calamity howlers have been at work there, too I ) will bring In the fruit truckers, who will buy the etop, at good prices, right at the orchards, All of the high bench country has peaches this year, Olsen reports. Where the frost and lack of pollenlzation has thinned the crop, the peaches will grow larger as a result, and the per tree crop, in bushels, very possibly may be the same as if there were more peaches, but , smaller, on each tree, he explained. i In denial of the statements that the peach , Quoting two d crop Is a "total loss,"- - Olsen declares, Ive got 40 acres of peaches that will need thinning. He goes on to say he has another 40 acres that wont need thinning, but "theyll produce lots of peaches. 'Olsen anticipates an excellent market on fruit this season.. It would have been good even stake league play. 8.00 P. M. Installation cere- monies of American Legion Post 10, War Memorial home. Friday, May 26 7.30 P. M. As for the pie cherry crop, it will be just about the same as last year a 60 to 80 percent crop Last year 21 carloads of pie cherries were shipped out of the Brigham City area. This year, Olsen anticipates, most of the pie cherries will leave by truck possibly five to seven carloads will be shipped. Likely there still will be a few s brined for maraschino sweets and processing, but the higher market may discourage this outlet. The early and ungrounded gloom over the fruit crop loss each spring is detrimental to local markets and marketing, in various ways. And the fruit growers resent it! fill |
