May 24, 1950 SPORT SHOTS OVER CARBON WITH TRIUMPH a Seagull Aviation Score by innings: Box Elder Oil :..... 001 Carbon The Elder Bees, coached by veteran Vernal Harris, will go Into the state finals for baseball as the underdog against either South High of Salt Lake City or Davis High from (Farmington. Davis and South are in a tie and they will battle it out this week to see who will face the Hivers in the big game. If South High beats Davis, the game will most likely be played in Derks field in Salt Lake. But if Davis should win , the semi-fingame from South, the game will probably be played at John Afleck park In Ogden. The game will be played Thursday afternoon. Box Elder has played both e clubs In games and lost both of. them. Against Davis, Junior Cowley held the Hivers to only three scratch hits and no runs while striking out seven Bees. Davis collected 16 hits oft of three Bee Hurlers which irtclucled three home-run- s and two triples. South High toppled Box Elder 11 to 5 In another practice game. It was also played In the local orchard as was the Davis game. Bills and Bethell gave up 6ix hits while getting six Bees out via strikeouts. South got 10 hits off of four Hivers which included only three extra base bits. To look at these figures, one would think that the Bees didnt have a chance against these two power clubs. But! ' ed more than the Hive. During league play. Box Elder became the terror of the Region One league. They won three of their 'games before they even started. If you recall, against Bear River, Box Elder blasted out 26 hits and pushed across 24 runs to win that game. In the very next game, South Cache was crushed 27 to 1 .when the Bees boomed out 22 more hits. .They played North Cache and slapped them down wit ha 15 to 6 victory. Against Weber, they had to come from behind to win 15 to 8.- Logan was defeated seven to two in a game called by rain. All together,' the Bees, are marked as the power club of the state, but their pitching Is the one questionable odd on the team. Both chuckers are sophomores and the relief pitcher is a junior. To even up the age spaces, the team ' has six seniors on the tean , ta hold them together. iFive of these are main stringers from the state championship team of last year. !
