I feel the message I have tried to put across Is timely and also may answer some questions that high school grads may have. I graduated from Bear River High school in the spring of service that 1951 and entered fall in the Air Force. In my class I and one other have decided on this a our careers. I retire at 38 and he at 40. In five and a half years I have been in all but 13 states and from Korea gunner for ten and a half months) to Newfoundland (aircraft control and warning Radar). With what I have to say I may be stepping on someones toes. I say this as I think of the parents to whose children this article is directed. To the parents and graduates who think these words should never be published J am sorry, but I think It should be brought to the attention of all who call the United States home. Service to your country Is your duty as well as a privilege, whether you are drafted or choose to enlist. If and when your turn comes to serve in the various services, feel that it Is an honor and not something that will waste your time. Service is what you make it. If you want to save money for a house, a car, or farming equipment, the service offers you one of the best opportunities. An Army sergeant or an Air Force Staff sergeant with more than four years time, can save one hundred dollars a month and still have enough over to live a comfortable life. If you have wanted to travel and see how other people live, then again I say look to one of the service branches. You may or may not get an overseas assignment, but then you still have the chance of seeing the rest of the United States. Then you have free medical and dental expenses, plus a place to sleep and three meals a day. Usually you will be close to a large city so if you want off- so I am sending it on to you. CAMPFIRES! Then In the event you would like to go on a formal mission, while you are in service you can save part if not all the money you will need. Maybe you are thinking of a college education. Service offers you the way. While In service coursyou can take home-studes from any school of higher education in the United States. If you are in the Far East you can take, courses on base from the University of Southern California, and if you are in the Newfoundland, Labrador complex, the University of Maryland offers you these night classes. The section you are assigned will let you off for these classes. Some service technical schools also will give you college credit toward your degree. Anyone of the service branches affords a place for a young man who has no idea what career he would like to go Into after his high school education. Here a man can think and plan what he would like to dq and be when he finally takes his place In society. Some of the graduates will decide after one tour of duty to continue and make the service a career, and to them I say welcome and may we keep our country as we now know It, a young, strong, and proud nation, where bombs have never dropped. To the few who will remain for retirement, I will also say, you have chosen the hardest and the easiest job. You will have a steady income , every month while you are still young enough, in most cases, to enjoy the fruits of your labors. In the event you want you could even go into busines for yourself. Graduates, if you think the service is for you, then by all means I suggest picking the branch you want and enlist for the three or four years. It passes very fast and while you are away from home your education ft going on. You are gaining first-han- d Information about the area you happen to be in. You can learn the language and customs of the people of various lands around the world. I say, look to the services for a fuller life and a better understanding of the populace of the world and her problems. Allan Christensen, USAF.
