Show Marathon up next BOX ELDER JOURNAL, Brigham City, Utah Thursday, February 3, 1977 GS fracksters release 4 race schedule The Golden Spike Track club has announced its race schedule for the coming season which includes four major events. The dates were set at a recent meeting with other Utah track clubs to coordinate activities statewide, according to John Ensign, spokesman for the local group. Leading off the season will be the third annual Golden Spike Marathon scheduled for May 7. It will begin at 7 a.m. at Promontory. Ensign is race director with help provided by the local Rotary club, Northern Utah REACT, the Chamber of Commerce, Box Elder High school, city officials and state and local police. The Utah Summer Olympics has been moved up to June 8 and 9 under the lights at Box Elder High school. Community Schools Director Les Dunn will continue to head this event. This format runs from 6 to 9 p.m. each night and is aided by the Box Elder High coaching staff. Peach Days Road Race The popular will run Sept. 10 at 10 a.m. Alan Jensen is race director. The fourth running of this event is expected to draw more than the 58 who ran last year and concluded along the Main street parade two-eveni- 11-mi- le y f . . route. Nolan Hess . sinks Logan Bear eager nets honors A Bear River High school basketball player who led his team to an upset win over ranked Logan High last week is the Box Elder News and Journal Athlete of the week. Nolan Hess, a guard, received the honor when he scored 18 points, including 10 of 13 from the foul line, to pace the Bears to a 4844 win over the third-rate- d Grizzlies. Hess also tossed in 11 points as the Bears downed Weber last Friday for their second straight win in Region One. Hess, a averages 11.3 points a game six assists. More importantly, hes the field general on the club, handling the ball and directing the offense. If it wasnt for Nolans control of the basketball in the second half and his clutch foul shooting, we could well have lost the Logan game. He handled Logans press very well and enabled us to hold the ball for the good shot, commented Coach Paul Jeppesen. Nolan is studentbody president at Bear River and has served as sophomore class president. He attended Boys State. He lettered in football and received honors as a split end and defensive back. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Cleon N. Hess of Tremonton. Receiving honorable mention was Box Elder wrestler Kevin Nelson who pinned Highland Highs on Tuesday and was third in undefeated 5--8, Saturdays eight-wa- 135-pou- y. The Turkey Trot in November will be the final event of the season under direction of Jack Winn and the city recreation department. It begins at 10 a.m. on Nov. 19 at John Adams park. Prizes for winners include turkeys and Cache Valley cheese. Emphasis is on youth with elementary, and junior and senior high age groups for boys and girls. A Greater Salt Lake track club is in the process of being formed and will be the parent coordinating club publishing an annual statewide running schedule and promoting the send- -' ing of Utahs best runners out of state for some of the regional and national events. The girls 11 and 12 relay team was fifth in the 200 medley. Members are Sharon Green, Kimi Ellis, Rose Hailing and Lorie Hurst. Attend Church Mrs. LaPriel Secrist accompanied Mrs. Annette Adams of Bear River City to Brigham City Sunday where they attended church in the Sixth ward where Mindi Montgomery, small daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Montgomery was confirmed by Curtis Kaneko of Tremonton after being baptized on Saturday. Mrs. Secrist accompanied Annette back to Bear River City where she enjoyed dinner at the Anderson home. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Pierson and son Russell spent Friday through Sunday in Kaysville as guests of Dr. and Mrs. Blaine Pierson and family. Cubs earn Arrows Recently, Mike Wright, Kendale Reeder and Brian Billing (from left) earned their Arrow of Light awards. Mike is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Wright, Kendale is the son of Bishop and Mrs. Lynn Reeder, and Brian is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Billings, all of Perry.
