Lee Is Candidate In Scramble for Utah Senate Seat Former governor, J. Bracken Lee this week announced himself as an independent candidate for the U. S. Senate from Utah. In revealing his plans to run outside the two major parties, Lee explained that both have deviated from their platforms and that we now have government by misrepresentation, under the Republican party, as well as the Democratic party. Lee, who served as a Republican governor of Utah for two terms ran for as governor two years ago as an independent after losing to Clyde in the primary. He drew 90,000 votes in a losing effort. Mr. Lee said he would run on the following platform: I pledge that I will work for which and support legislation, will grant the people of Utah and this nation the right to vote for the repeal of personal income taxes. I solemnly promise to vote as a senator to restore the independence of the United States, to a sound and stable dollar, to maintain peace with honor, to recover the Constitutional states rights of the forty-ninand of the people, and to eradicate Socialism and Communism in America. I stand for government, which guarantees to every citizen the same equal justice and the same privileges under the law. I pledge to do everything in my power to reduce the size and the cost of the federal government to the end that the people once more shall become the masters of their government. 1 pledge to work and vote against the giving away of the "forpeoples money for eign aid, or any other kind of programs. I place the welfare of my nation above that of any other country on earth and when I must choose between the successful operation of my home industry' and foreign competition, I shall support home industry. e THIS WEEKS TOP 30 mail-orde- miracles r Distribution of "miracle cures is confined to professional channels. Watkins declared his intention of seeking the Republican nomination for the U. S. Senate seat which he has held for the past 12 years. Watkins explained that his action in running for another term , . is based not only on my record during the past 12 years but also on what I sincerely believe I can do for the state and the nation during the next six years. He emphasized that with two terms behind him, he has gained considerable senority which would become even greater if he were to return to the senate for another six years . The Republican senator pointed specifically to the Important Sen ate appropriations committee and his entitlement to succeed to one of the two vacancies left by the retirements of Senator Knowland of California and Senator Ives of New York Briefly summarizing the changing conditions in the country since his election In 1946, Watkins stated: In my announcement of candidacy in 1946, the statement was made that we were living in critical times and that there were many important problems ahead which demanded the utmost care and consideration in seeking solutions. Critical times are still with us. And some of the problems ahead have grown in magnitude. For two decades we have moved from one crisis to another. On the other hand, we have survived many crises, and in the process have acquired exper- - BROWNS ience and knowledge which should contribute to 'the solution of these new problems. Perhaps the greatest problem confronting us. today as a nation is the grave and complex problem of keeping the peace without surrendering either our national hbnor or our hard- - won liberties. This blessing of peace 9nd liberty which we want for ourselves and all others cannot be achieved unless America gives leadership and assistance to honest efforts to keep the world at peace. This is opr most important challenge at this - time. If I am returned to the Senate, I shall utilize the experience I have acquired in an earnest and prayerful effort to contribute to the solution of this paramount national and international problem. - Arthur V.
