U I two-part- y Just About AnytkUuf A By with candidates without any party Jabels. Personally well take the good old system which was born when the overwhelming population of the United States was rural and most of the cities of the country were smaller than Brigham City. Well take an election campaign with enough sparks to prompt candidates and their supporters to say what is in their hearts. No administration, city, county, state or national, is above criticism and it is ,the campaign critcism that produces pro-- j gressive changes. Mixed in with the constructive criticism in virtually every election, of course, is to candidates personalities that are not kind. Keelings may be hurt, unfairly, but even this criticism has its points. can take it; they have had to to be Bob Crompton Looking For A .Mayor If you can judge the quality of a politician by his reluctance to run, as in the case of Dwight D. Eisenhower and Adlai Stevenson, Brigham City is well fixed for prospective city fathers. Perhaps it is just too early for candidates for mayor and city coundlmen to heave their headgear in the ring. Brigham City people, as well as other cities in the county, will elect a mayor and two r couueilmen this year. , Still in the rumor category is the report that a draft to renominate Mayor Lorenzo J. Butt for mayor is underway in Republican circles. Others being metioned are W. Vosco Call, manager of the Capitol theater and Ross C. Bowen, Chamber of Coipmerce executive secretary. Bott has not indicated whether he will go again or not. Tall in the saddle on the Democrats donkey are Orson Christensen, who is being urged by friends to toss his hat in the ring. John Howard, manager of the Howard hotel, has friends backing him for the job. Two of the, present counciljmen, Glen Burt and Delos Thompson have also received the encouragement of many to run yjj their past fine records." Election Fireworks Around election time each year there are Democrats and Republicans both who start y suggesting that politics haje no place in a small community because feelings are hurt in the heat of a campaign. They suggest we become one big happy family, with one nominating convention and have complained recently, bitterly, to us. As any gardener can tell you its as easy to do something about the weather as it is to stop weeds from growing. But that isnt the , es Pofi-tica- politicians. It is not impossible to have a gentlemens campaign" and two party politics too, as Eisenhower and Stevenson demonstrated in 1952. And you can have it with that vitally inimportant criticism and Concern over the dangerous traffic condition in front of Central school has prompted many suggestions and at least three jieople have offered the opinion that an underpass, beneath main street in front of the school should be considered as a solution. .With an underpass, they argue, children n section of the city from the t would not find it necessary to expose themstream of selves to the main north-sout- h traffic at all. They would walk beneath it. l. Students living north of Second south (U. S. 91) and.east of Main (U. S. 191) would still 'have to cross one main highway, but under much safer cirdumstanceg. .Pros and cons of an underpass were dis- -' ussed at the public meeting of the Chamber pf Commerce road committee, PT.A. and school patrons. It was pointed out by Prin- cipal J. D. Gunderson that a similar underpass in another fcity had degraded into a public toilet and developed into a generally bad feature. Also it was brought out that an underpass does not guarantee that children will use it. If in a hurry and there isnt a supervisor watching they may dart across the highway thereby risking an accident. But, at the same time, it might still be the best solution available. Gates could be fastened to the underpass openings and closed after school hours. The idea does deserve the consideration of interested people. south-easter- 11 Ike Autographs Photo Weeds Grow In Abundance i . t iTh apricot and cherry crops may have been a flop in these parts this year but the weeds have ignored the frosts, the drough, wind imd the hail and the wrath of a multitude and grown in profuse abundance.
