Jack Jorgensen investigated, questioning four juveniles found in the vehicle. Police officers noticed fresh footprints in the snow leading to the high school and made a check of the building. In the meantime the car with the juveniles drove off. Patrolman Chatterton discovered the break-iat about 1:18 a.m. A sliding door on the west side of the building was pried open to gain entry. Yeager, Bakersfield, was asleep when the motor home, driven by a hitchiker Yeager picked up on the Oregon-Idah- o boarder, crashed, burned and disintegrated under the overpass. The hitchiker, Mike E. Urbanek, 18, Denver, Colo., crawled out of the burning wreckage after impact and was treated and released from Valley hospital in Tremonton later Saturday. The young showman had an assortment of reptiles in the vehicle which included some boa constrictors, a turtle, iguanas, lizards and several smaller snakes. Investigating officer, Utah highway Patrol Trooper Ken Mecham, said the southbound motor home hit the pillar with full impact and "burst into flames. "The vehicle was "spattered" all over the highway and only one wall of the unit remained intact. The reptiles were scattered on the road and many died in the flames or froze to e death in the temperature. The driver told the trooper he noticed some kind of steering problem with the vehicle and did not fall asleep. Trooper Mecham said the vehicle ran off the roadway and hit the pillar headon. five-degre- The wreckage was splintered so badly that Trooper Mecham said he couldnt even recognize what type of vehicle it was. He found a California license plate. The highway patrolman said the accident occurred about 4:15 a.m. A Tremonton ambulance and the volunteer fire department responded to the call, after the blaze was reported by a passing truck driver. Brigham City Police Dispatcher Blaine Barnard said he got reports that the blaze could be seen as far away as the Brigham City sewage disposal plant Debris was scattered all over the highway so southbound traffic had to be rerouted through the Honeyville off and on ramps around the overpass. Board Schedules Bid Opening The Box Elder Board of Education will open bids on the new McKinley Elementary school at Tremonton when it meets in regular session Wednesday, Feb. 2. The session will be conducted in the board room, upstairs in the county courthouse, Brigham City, beginning at 8 p.m. A reproduction of the agenda can be found on Page 2 today. pears destined to remain in its present quarters. As presented, the municipal structure will have three stories, the middle one at ground level. It will contain 14,500 square feet, have a partially unfinished basement, cost an estimated $24 per square foot and take 12 months to construct. Planned is space for the recreation department, Public works (including utilities departments), city attorney,!, treasurer, recorder, city court, mayor and .city council. It was brought out that civil defense quarters could be finished in the basement area and that a drive-i- window for paying utility bills was not included, the latter having been talked of earlier as a convenience to the public. n Show Sketches rough site schematic sketch produced by the architects showed, the structures location as the northeast corner of the Main-Forestreet intersection. Actually, two sketches were shown, one depicting the existing city hall and One without it. Both featured extensive landscaping and parking. The estimated cost for construction only was set at $348,000 with site work, including asphalt paving, walks, curbs and landscaping, adding $33,000. Architects fees on the project would be $22,900 with another five percent or $19,500 added for contingencies. Furnishings costing an estimated $35,000 would complete the total project cost. Mayor Ole Zundel said optimistically that bids should be let no later than May 1. A st Public Meetings Set In the interim, public meetings are scheduled to give airing to the proposed design and financial picture and procedures and a bond election that probably will be for $500,000. "This amount is easily within the realm of the city to do, Mayor Zundel stated. The people here have never disappointed a council on a bond issue, not if it was within the citys capacity to afford and was compatible with the rest of the community, he added. He pointed out further that "our bonding people tell us we couldnt do it at a better time. On Police Space The decision not to include space for police in the new building came on a recommendation from Mayor Zundel who pointed out that "the police department wants to remain out for several reason. For one thing, he said it would be a distraction to other city employes when officers bring people in. Excluding it trimmed 5,800 square feet and an estimated $139,000 from the project.
