Show t $1 Million Loan Okayed One hundred end ninty-on- e yean ego Tuesday, the Declaration of Independence was adopted and the United States of America came into being. During these 191 years, the young country grew to be the most democratic and free country in the world. It took many hardships and sacrifices to build the U. S. to the heights it reaches now, in 1967. All throughout its history the U. S. had to defend itself from other nations, to keep its soil free from aggressive people, that wished to bury democracy. The British, during the war of 1812 and Germany and Japan during World War II tried, but failed to defeat the U. S. Many of our ancestors, fathers, sons and relatives fought bravely in these wars to preserve our country. On Tuesday, July 4, we should remember what we are celebrating. It will be the anniversary of the day the United States gained its independence. We should display the flag and show other nations how we, as Americans, feel about our country. "Old Glory," represents the red blood spilled by many American soldiers in all previous wars and today m Vietnam; the pure white principles of democracy and the free, blue sky, Americans live under. This isnt corny or over patriotic nationalism, its just plain ordinary Americanism. Theres too many attitudes going around now; flag and draft card burning and demonstrations by people saying the U. S. is wrong in Vietnam. People who call themselves Americans and believe in democracy should be willing to fight for their country and its principles. Look at it this way. The poor farmer in South Vietnams rice paddies cant protect himself against North Vietnamese terrorists. He needs help. Try to put yourself in the place of a parent of a South Vietnamese family. Youre home after a hard days work and suddenly shots are heard. The whole town is run over by Viet Cong and soon you are taken prisoner, only to watch your children being tortured or killed. The VC have employed lousy ways of killing people in this war. Could you imagine them paying a small child 50 cents to throw a grenade into a Gl jeep. Things like this happen. Ana what about our boys over there? Theyre fighting and getting killed in Vietnam while back here, where its safe, denounce everything they do; and, refuse to support them. When our enemies see these protestors denouncing U. S. actions, it,s pretty good propaganda for them. Maybe we shold help them one step further. Send all the protestors and demonstrators over to China or Russia and see what happens. If they dont like American ideals maybe China or Russia would suit them better. We were helped by France during our revolution against England. Why shouldnt we help someone now when they need it. When we celebrate the "fourth lets remember what were celebrating. Its not just a picnic down at the local park, a fishing outing or shooting off fireworks. We are celebrating the fact that the U. S. is a free and independent nation. These common things to us like freedom of religeon and speech and the right to vote are still goals in other countries. When you are taking a bite out of that hot dog and pass the potato salad around, keep in mind that American soldiers are fighting that very moment in Vietnam, to make the world a better place in which to live. Flv the flag on the Fourth of July, be proud of it and nonor it. rs Box Eldar School district Is going to borrow $1 million to keep fis ally sound until tax money starts coming In.
