Helen has had a colorful life. Shes a graduate of Gooding High school after which she was employed at the Mountain State Telephone company. She met her husband while attending high school and they corresponded regularly while he was serving in the US Navy. Sent Overseas After their marriage, John was sent overseas and Helen remained in Gooding while he was away. Cooking for the public presents a challenge, but Helen received nothing but compliments on the menus she prepared. Ive cooked since I was 16 years of age she told me. I like preparing main dishes the best. I do lots and lots of canning. We have our own garden and many various kinds of fruit trees. Helens talents are not strictly confined to cooking. She sews, crochets, plans parties for the marrieds in the Second ward, is one of the service and activity teachers and lists bowling and swimming as two of her favorite sports. n n Have Seven Children Helen and John have four daughters and three sons whose names all begin with the letter S. Theres Mrs. Bud (Susan) Grover of Elwood who will present them with their first grandchild this fall ; Steven who is 17; Shelli 16; Sherri 13; Shawn 8; Shane 6; and Stacy 4. John is employed at Hill Air Force Base. The Batis family live across the street from the new McKinley Elementary school. No problem getting our younger children to school on time Helen said. And its fun to watch the children play during recess time. Helen has been employed at the U & I Sugar company during the past four campaigns. Camping is one of the favorite pastimes of the Batis family. Last summer they enjoyed a trip to Disneyland. The girls are good to help with the cooking Helen confided. Id like Box Elder Journal readers to try my recipe for spaghetti with meat mushroom sauce. So many people have asked for this special recipe. MUFFINS (makes mix for one gallon) 2 c. 100 percent bran or all bran, 2 c. boiling water. Pour over bran and cool. Mix and add to first mixture 2 12 c. sugar, 2 c. plus 3 T. shortening, 4 eggs, Add following and mix well. 1 qt. buttermilk, 4 c. bran buds, 5 tsp. soda, 6 y2 c. flour, 5 tsp. salt. Raisins, blueberries, dates, dried apples may be added if desired. Bake at 375 degrees for 20 min. (Batter will keep in refrigerator up to six weeks.) SPAGHETTI WITH MEAT AND MUSHROOM SAUCE In large skillet, heat: 2 T. olive or salad oil. Saute in hot oil until tender 1 clove garlic, minced; 1 large onion, sliced. For additional information call Yon-ek- o Aoki at 279-841- 723-781- Tot Lot is a popular place for children this summer, gathering each day from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Lake View Community school for lots of fun. Actually, the Tot Lot is a program rather than a place and it is designed to correlate play and planned learning experiences for preschool children. A smorgasboard of creative, intellectual, artistic and physical activities is being included in the program under the direction of Karen Hyer assisted by Wendy Merrill. The children come to the school for two hours per day for k a session, with classes limited to 25 children. This is the first time ever for this summer program, and the class is not completely full yet. Classes will run continuously from June 6 through July 29, and times that a child misses for a weekly church day or family vacation may be made up in later attendance. Each couple is asked to bring its own steak and eating utin-sels. A planned potluck to compliment the steaks is being arranged by a special committee headed by Francene Beecher. All members will be contacted as to what to bring in addition. If not contacted please 3 call Francene at for information. All members and husband are encouraged to attend.
