President T. N. Taylor of Provo has decided to enter the race for the noini- nation for governor at the hands of the Democratic state convention to be held in Salt Lake City, August 30. His friends from various parts of the state have been urging him for the past few weeks to enter the race but he has been or less reluctant to do so because of the fact that he accepted the presidency of the Utah stake last fall and this involves very heavy church duties. Mr. Taylor had always said that he had "enough to look after" without entering politics. He is president of the Farmers and Merchants bank of Provo and active manager of Taylor Brothers company, which operates one of the largest department stores in Utah south of Salt Lake, with two branch establishments in the principal princi-pal towns of this section of the state. Mr. Taylor was born in Provo fifty-two fifty-two years ago and he has been serving serv-ing the people of the community for a number of years. He has built up a -reputation as a public spirited citizen, has served as mayor of Provo, as vice president and a member of the state council of defense during the world war, and in other capacities. During his brief visit to Salt Lake Saturday Mr. Taylor was in consultation consulta-tion with many leading Democrats, and a number of them expressed satisfaction satis-faction over Mr. Taylor's consent to make the race for governor. When asked about liia candidacy Mr. Taylor said: "As far as seeking this or any office is concerned, I am not and never have been a candidate. The gra.ve re. sponsibilities of such a position as tha governorship of a rich and growing commonwealth outweigh tho personal satisfaction a man may derive from his election. "Naturally, I feel pleased with the assurances of support I have received from men and women of all parties and creeds and from all sections of. the state. Any man would feel honored, to have such unsought proffers of help in securing a nomination nomina-tion for the high office of governor- "But I would shrink from assuming the responsibilities of the position, Jin the event of my election, were it nof" for the class of citizens, irrespactiva of party or other affiliations, who are urging me to enter the race. I feel that I may count on their friendship and support, not only in the campaign but in the discharge of my official duities, if elected. "Under no circumstances am I seek lng this nomination or the office. If I can serve my state and advance her Interests by accepting the nomination and the office, I am willing to enter the arena. Only with, this in mind may I be considered a candidate for the Democratic nomination for gOT-ernor." |
