Show WILSON ASKS FOR 8UFFRAGE. Tells Senate That Passage of Bill Is Necessary as War Measure. Washington! In a personal address ;to the senate on September 30, President Presi-dent Wilson asked for the passage of the woman suffrage federal amendment amend-ment resolution as a vital war measure. meas-ure. Unexpectedly Intervening In the senate sen-ate fight, the president went to the capital at 1 o'clock to tell the senators why he regarded favorable action on the resolution necessary. Approval of the resolution, the president said, was necessary If America Is to lend the world to democracy, for It will be Judged by Its acts. "It Is my duty to win the war," said the president, "and to ask you to remove re-move every obstacle that stands In the way of winning It I tell you plainly that this measure which I urge upon you Is vital to the winning of the wnr and to the energies alike of prep-nratlon prep-nratlon and of battle. And not to the winning of the war only, It Is vital to the right solution of the great problems prob-lems which we must settle, and settle Immediately, when the war Is over." Senator I'lielnn of California, Democrat, Demo-crat, referred to the president's action ac-tion as a "compliment" to the senate, declaring the executive had answered the question of Senator Bennett of South Carolina as to whether the resolution wns a wnr measure. Senator Sen-ator l'helan called upon the senate to respond to the president's appeal, while Senators Smith of South Carolina Caro-lina ofW Beckham of Kentucky, both Democrats, Insisted that the resolution resolu-tion was not a war measure. |
