Show BEN LOMOND BEACON, Jan. 1 8, 1 979, Page 1 2 Exchange teacher and family enjeymg experience in Utah by Keith Duncan The International Foriegn Exchange Teaching program is in full swing and North Ogden is getting a piece of the action As of December 30th, the Ross Kimber family of Australia officially made their one-year home in North Ogden The Kimbers, who arrived late at night on Dec 30th, are occupying the Pat Smith home, while the Smith family lives in the Kimbers home for a year in Australia Mr . Kimber jumped right into his role as an instructor of an American classroom two days after he arrived, he teaches at Lynn Elementary in Ogden. Dons Smith wont officially begin her teaching in Australia until early in February School round for Australians which includes a k break at Christmas and two other two week vacations All the snow Utah has received the past few weeks has been a welcome and unwelcome site for the Kimbers Its so cold here, remarked Mr Kimber, we just left a heat wave m Australia, I believe temperatures were 80 and above when we left Its been a change in many ways Accompanying Mr. Kimber in the year long exchange are his wife, Ann and their two children, Tieram 7 and Blair, 3 The children, who had never experienced snow before, spend hours playing in the snow, explained their parents. The family is deeply impressed with the big mountains and less impressed with snow filled driveways that must be plowed after a snowstorm Its a dry cold, not really that unbearable, said Kimber, weve had to purchase winter clothes for the children and ourselves Its been an experience we wont forget m preparing for the snow I guess there a lot of goes and his family are recent arrivals in the Beehive State. Mr. Kimber is involved with the International Foreign Exchange Teacher program. His wife, Ann, and their two children, Tieram and Blair, will stay together for one year before heading back to Australia. ROSS KIMBER year six-wee- similarities between the States and Australia, but being new I tend to see the differences much more quickly than those things that are similar. The central heating in the 'schools is one thing I noticed quickly. In Australia, its just a central oil heater, but of course our winters are much more milder. CAL-CUSTO- -- Gwmm M SHtttf January breaks Teachers instruct a place called Bundoora The Kimbers are family oriented and enjoy family activities They feel it important to have their own pursuits Mrs Kimber is contemplating attending college during her stay here Melbourne is the home of over three million people, so the change to quiet North Ogden has been a change within itself. The Kimbers find distinct differences in some aspects of lifestyle I remember seeing a basketball game on television and couldnt believe everything that went with the game There were cheerleaders, a big halftime show and everything else In Australia, sport is sport, none of the extra things that go with sports here And why do they call football, football, when the kicking is done so little, questioned Mr Kimber The Kimbers were impressed with their drive through Salt Lake, notmg expecially how quiet it was and how easy it was to drive through Utahs biggest city In teaching, Mr Kimber has so far determined the American system to be more structured and formal than that of his country. He notices differences in the schools being governed here by local districts and The Kimbers were very active in the church duties and activities at home and dont plan to drop that part of their life off They enjoy being with couples of their own age and performing in family related activities I believe were going to enjoy our stay here, despite the snow, smiled Mr Kimber, we enjoy the learning experience We find Americans place much more emphasis on patriotism than Australians We dont have the oath or allegence that you have and youll never find as many flags flying in our country We find on television and throughout the newspaper that Americans place a big emphasis on the American way of life We!bsB,,s I FBLA If pushes drive NANETTE HOLMES, Mi Hui Pak, Carolyn Winder and Craig Warnes are four big reasons the FBLA has been successful in their blood drive going on this week and next at Weber High. Shopping has been an experience In Australia, shops stay open five days a week and for only the 8 hours a day, we find it quite different here, said Mr. Kimber The newly arrived family finds food prices pretty much the same, with the exception of meat Its much higher here, " h whereas in communities, Australia the school program is controlled from a central office in Melbourne. No separate school districts Its been different being with the children so long during the day In school at home, the children are allowed more time outside Here, that can become a problem with all the white stuff outside Hot lunches and the provision of an early breakfast are new to me Children bring their own lunch or go home for it in most Australian schools, said Kimber.
