But then, maybe you dont need to lose weight! Maybe you are one of the lucky lean few who have nothing against your thighs. But are you sure? Have you tried any of the popular tests just to be on the safe side? Have you ever tried to pinch an inch?? Pinch an inch, you say?? Yes, indeed, if you can pinch an inch of fat anywhere on your bod- y- well, sorry, Bub thats the way it goes. There is no escape from the awful truth once you have pinched an inch. Wait a minute! Who are they kidding?? Pinch an inch, my fat foot! Fashion models pinch inches. Fat people grab slab. I should know. Id be lucky to pinch only an inch. Pinthe ching is for the petite ... pleasingly perfect. The rest of us have to grab. Thats more like it. And so, having grabbed my slab, and having realized my delusions of thinness are at long last over, I take matters into my own pudgy little hands. Huffing and puffing like the Little Engine That Couldnt, I joined a Weight Loss Club. Now by nature, I am not a joiner. As a kid, I was a Brownie Scout by force. I hated clubs then, I hate clubs now. But Im desperate, and ready to fight fat with fire. At the club, I am embarrassed. Long, lard bound lines form in front of the scale, the feared iron idol of the fat watcher. Worried women beg the beast for mercy, trying to forget the Twinkies they guzzled half an hour ago. Men are reduced to quivering like a Jell-- o mold of New Jersey, thinking guiltily of Friday nights pizza. I grit my teeth and wonder if the scale will breathe fire in anguish under my load. This is almost as bad as the annual for the school kids. There is no hell like the hell of being the heaviest kid in the 4th grade. I was a slab grabber back then, too! Enough day dreaming! Its almost my turn at the scales. In a flush of fear, I rush to the bathroom. Its my only chance of redemption.
