We have been experiencing a lot of problems with woodburning stoves, reported North View Fire Department Chief Terrell J. Call. Some of our problems result from putting a single wall flue right through walls that are combustible. It works great until you get a chimney fire. Ihen the pipe gets hot and the adjoining materials catch fire. Chief Calls advice was to use a triple wall flue when installing a woodburning stove. Any time you dont have the triple wall, the flue should be a minimum of 18 inches from any combustible materials, he warned. Fires can also occur in properly installed chimneys if the flues are not cleaned at least once a year. Because wood in stoves burns more slowly than wood in fireplaces, tarpitch and creosote normally consumed by fire or expelled from the chimney tend to collect in the flue. A good hot fire will ignite the chimney residue and set the chimney on fire, Chief Call said. Chimney sweeps or home owners should clean the chimney once a year or more to prevent such fires, ac series childbirth for classes education prospective mothers and of DENTURE WEARERS A major advancement CUSHION GRIP DENTURE ADHESIVE one application holds ' comfortably up tg 4 days fathers is scheduled to begin at St. Benedicts Hospital on March Wednesday, 5, and March 6. "They are quick back there to point out that there is a difference between registration and a draft, and that the President is asking simply for registration, Steele said. "At the beginning of the briefing there was a decided majority against the draft and registration, but I think that by the end of the briefing many of the student officers had changed their minds. "When we had the chance to question those who make the policies, their rationale seemed much more plausible than sometimes is reported in the press, he added. "One of the basic reasons for registration is that it would be a symbolic gesture on our part to show Russia we are prepared to go to war if we have to and the type of aggression we experienced is not in Afghanistan tolerable by the United States," he said. "I agree with that reasoning, I feel that it is very good, but I still dont know if Im in favor of registration or not. He noted that about 60 percent of the students at the briefing favored registration with the remaining 40 percent opposing it. Concerning Afghanistan, Steele reported President Carter as saying the Soviet1 invasion there was a sur-- j prise to the U.S. "While they knew of the Soviet buildup, he said,: "President Carter explained! that it was a departure from; anything the Russians had done since World War II. ; Steele quoted Zbigniew: Brzezinski, U.S. National! Steele said he learned that the administration feels the era of European and the "Super Powers control of the world is over. He quoted Brzezinski as saying "In the 1980s and thereafter were going to begin looking more to the Third World as potential powers, especially because of the oil situation. He claims the Third World "will begin demanding a portion of the power of the world and well have to deal with that. Brzezinski reportedly said "We must create good relationships with the Third World powers." |
