Just thinking about it makes me feel overstuffed with food, and full of love for the people I share it with. In our family everyone pitches in and cooks, even the little kids. We always end up with enough food for all of us to coast on for several days salads, vegetables, bread, dressing, turkey, ham, cake, ice cream and pies. Oh, the pies! Each of us makes different kinds of pies, so we end up with about every kind you could conjure up. Its too hard to choose. We just take a sliver of each! Some of the favorite things that are traditional with us are very simple: Creamed Cauliflower Steam fgozen cauliflower for 5 minutes in a covered pan with only inch of water in the botton. Start it on high heat, but reduce it to low when the water starts to boil. Do not overcook. Pour Cream of Mushroom soup over the cauliflower. Stir and heat to serving temperature and enjoy. Baked or Broiled Pears ' Drain pear halves. Place in a baking dish. Put a dollop of red jelly in the center of each pear. Bake or broil about 10 minutes until pear is hot and jelly is melted. Yummy! Cottage Cheese and Yogurt Salad Mix one large carton of lime flavored yogurt, a pint of small curd cottage cheese and a small package of dry Jello together. Serve plain or with fruit. Since Thanksgiving Day will be this Thursday, 1 did a little, this surveying to find out what area folks are thankful for, holiday season. Almost with one voice, they expressed concern over recent international events and said they were so grateful to live here, where we have peace, freedom qnd concern for each other. So many people in the world live without the things . that we just expect to be there. Until we saw the picture of the starving Cambodians on the front of the Ogden paper, how many of us were really even, thankful for having an abundance of food? THELMA Amber Story, Lori Thompson, and Linda Cox (left to right) makfe plans for to mission Conservation program Football Follies The oldest active NFL Jr Sflf Conserve food in the Weber High School lunchroom. This is the conservation project of students Melanie Davis, Thelma Baldwin, Amber Story, Lori Thomp- son and Linda Cox. When Weber High recently began an Energy Conservation Program, these students were among many who were challenged to find a way to conserve energy. They decided an important way to conserve would be in the lunchroom. They began planning ways - to implement a conservation program about a week ago, and have many ideas and observations on the problem. Linda Cox talked to the lunchroom staff to find out what kinds of things are a problem. The committee plans to compile a questionaire to give to students on the problem of food wasted in the lunchroom. From this they hope to compile information which will help establish the main problems, and to let the students know how much food is wasted. They would like to see something done with leftover food. The lunchroom staff says they cant do anything with the food that has been served but not eaten. They are required to put it through the garbage disposal. The girls plan to write to the government and to their congressmen, such as Gunn McKay, about the problems, to find suitable solutions. One of the problems is that a lot of girls cant eat as much food as they are given. A possible way to prevent wasting the uneaten food would be for smaller portions to be served, with possibly one line for large portions, another line for smaller portions, so the lunches will not be delayed while requesting suitable portions. The girls are also interested in having a snack bar where students can make their own selections. The problem with this is that in order to comply with for Federal requirements lunch funds, according to lunchroom personnel, three items must be on the tray. The problem, from the students standpoint, is that much of this fowl is going to waste. If the student is permitted to say no, thanks, to un- desired food, then those items could be served to someone else or reused in the lunchroom, rather than would otherwise be wasted. They wondered if they could choose to have their wasted. Another cause of waste is the shortness of the lunch hour, as related to the high dessert without plain number of students that .cream or ice cream, etc. must be served. By the time and save 5 or 10 cents. students stand in line 0 They suggested students minutes to receive their share food to conserve; that is, if they have unwanted food, they dont have enough time to eat the food they food on their trays, they could give it to someone that have been served. likes or wants that food. The committee learned that the price now for school lunches is $.60 for high school students, but the actual cost of producing the meals ranges from $.80 to $2.25 (for a special occasion such as . Under Thanksgiving). if present guidelines, students selected their food items, the cost would be higher because Federal funds cannot be used to subsidize such a program. Some of the problems students mentioned were vegetables, peas, carrots, freezer burned vegetables, and macaroni salad. 07 DSWS3 started soggy The students also said they are served too much bread and butter. They are served two rolls or two slices of bread, which is often too much for the student to eat. Another point brought up was that some kids dont know you can ask for taco salad without the cheese. This would save cheese that DOILS A PS."! Y3J3 SAE3..oo The committee wants to involve other students in their project to conserve food in the lunchroom. Some ways suggested were a poster contest, skits, and essay contest. Bill teacher History Wayment talked to his students about the need to conserve and energy suggested several ideas. .From that experience these five girls decided it would be a worthwhile project for them to do for the school. They said, you look at those people over there (Cambodia, other nations in the Far East) starving nations and it makes you feel bad. Other nations hate us. It makes you feel bad because we have so much. Melanie, Thelma, Amber, Lori and Linda are looking for other weber Warriors to help them conserve energy in the lunchroom.
