It wasnt that our kids werent trying and it wasnt that Bingham team but wasnt a good football it was a game I felt for sure that we could have won, said Hancock. Optimistically, Coach Hancock felt his Falcons could have went 54 and still made the playoffs. Those feelings came in the beginning of the season. However Clearfield ended up 5 and still' made the playoffs. Nobody really blew us away, said Hancock in reflecting back on the season, The reasons we lost a lot of games was the mistakes we made ourselves. 4-- Perhaps thats why the loss to Bingham was so frustrating," It was so said Hancock, reminscent of the season. The 4-- season was Hancocks second straight losing season in a coaching spaa 5 ar Its the end of the world but its a bit frustrating. We knew the kids had to stay healthy and for the most part they did, except for Dean Vernon in the final game, our kids played healthy all season long. That was frustrating too, to see a kid bust it all season long and have to sit the sidelines the final game. I kept noticing Dean on the sideline against Bingham and you couldnt miss the tears that were on his face, said Hancock. Brent said he felt for a player like Vernon, who all season long had given 100 per cent. He felt Deans absence in the final game made a big difference in the final game. Offensive Line Clearfield overall started three juniors on defense and two on offense which will give Hancock a nucleus to build around next season. He is excited about several sophomores coming up in the ranks also. Eric Naylor, Kevin Porter, jpx sigjsiiiinisft RfUSnu! Mark Carter, and Shawn Moore will be back next season. Coach Hancock feds with a solid weight program and the use of the new weight room facility in the new gym, things can only get better for these young men. Hie offensive line was anchored by Kevin Neville who played as a running back as a junior. Hancock couldnt find words to describe Nevilles play in the offensive trenches and at one linebacker spot. Glen Simpson and Tim Robinett were two more seniors who starred for Hancock on offense. Robinett never played as a junior after coming off a knee injury. Shawn Moore was put in a starter position on the offensive line and will be back next season. Mark Carter was converted to die offensive center position and gained valuable experience with each play. Coach Hancock called Tim Gooch one of the leagues premier backs, up in the ranks of Openshaw and Lewis Cain. Defensive Picture Tackles Eric Naylor and Kevin Porter were stalwarts on defense and will be back agaia Clearfield certainly was aided with the strength at the defensive end positions where Ridler and Tracy played. Hie secondary was anchored by Gooch, Hicks, and move-i- n Mike Crawford. Jim Valentine also starred in that group. The Clearfield secondary had only three touchdowns scored on them, but Coach Hancock felt those three scores were crucial ones. Neville, Bybee and Vernon were siper strong points for Hancocks defense. Hancock respected Region One and felt the teams were competitive with most teams of their same caliber in the state. He also complimented his staff of John Flint, Bruce Craig Hansen, Ken Hicks, and Ray Meibos who he felt he worked more closely with than ever before. Dave Burke and Marvin Ellis. I don't see any reason why Tim shouldnt get a chance to play some college football, said Hancock. Vernon was adequate at the fullback position and was backed up by Scott Bybee who enjoyed a good season after missing his junior season. Greg Boarden had some great games and Greg had some bad games. Greg Ridler is what Coach Hancock called one of the most conscientious kids he has ever coached. Kevin Tracy is another who missed his junior . season but came back to enjoy an impressive year at tight end and defensive end. Brook Hicks was gaining maturity fast with each game late in the season. As far as a defensive, back, I dont 'think there is a better one in the league, said Hancock, Brook is a definite college prospect as a defensive back. But its for real, the trophy was presented to the Bonneville High studentbody last week by Coach 4--A Blair Martineau and his championship squad. I didnt expect the kids to do that well, admits Coach Martineau, I thought if we did our very best, wed take second. And that was if we ran our very best. Bonneville was pretty consistent through most of the year, going undefeated in region duel meets and eventually staking claim to the Region One championship at Weber State College. At the first of the season the Lakers had a different man finish fifth almost every meet. In state it was Dave Burnett who was the Lakers fifth man and finished in 36th place. Dave .was the difference for us in state, said Martineau. Doug Kent, the sophomore took 16th in state which was impressive. Craig Galloway faltered in the region meet and finished sixth in a courageous finish. Craig is gutty however, and probably ran his best race ever in the state meet and finished third for the Lakers. Tom HasseUman was Bonnevilles most consistent runner. . He finished ahead of Sky Views Hunter who was the Region One champion a few weeks back. Tom claimed sixth place in state after finishing 19th last season. Brent Sears, a junior, finished ninth in the state. Hes been up and down this season, but when it really counted, Brent came through for us, said Blair. The Laker coach, who is in his first year as a cross country coach there, said the kids make the coach look real good. They have a great tradition. here at Bonneville. It all started with Neville Petermen. Most of these kids on varsity have run under him and they know how to be winners, said Martineau. The Lakers will be strong again next year with several top juniors and sophomores returning. Bonneville hasnt lost a region duel meet in three years which is impressive considering how strong Weber and Clearfield were this season. Galloway stated after the meet, I went out there feeling like I had to make up for the region meet. As far as the team goes, they were super. I didnt think they would do that well. Brent Sears said, I didn't think I could make but it feels great I made it. Tom Hasselman said, I set a goal last year and made it and this year I did the same.
