Snyder, 39, is in his fourth year as the Aggie head man. He was voted the PCAA Coach of the Year last year for directing the Ags to a season and a share of the conference championship. The 1978 season marked another phase of Snyders reconstruction of Aggie football. After records of 8 the Ags sprinted to a and start and a national ranking last year under Snyder. A onetime University of Oregon fullback class of 1963 Snyder brought 11 years of collegiate coaching 7-- 4 3-- 4-- 7, experience to Logan with him late in 1975. In becoming Utah States 15th head coach in December of that year, he succeeded Phil Krueger who left USU to take an administrative-coachin- g position with John McKays Tampa Bay Buccaneers of the NFL. (Ironically, Snyder left McKays staff at the University of Southern California after two years to reunite himself with the Aggie program; he had served as Kruegers offensive coordinator during USU's successful 1973 season). The high regard Snyder commands among the nation's major college coaches is best typified by current USC Head Coach John Robinson. I was always impressed with Bruce as an extremely efficient coach, said Robinson. I have coached with Bruce before and I wanted him on my staff when I got this job. Then he went to USU. He has a great football mind in terms of fundamentals and concepts of strategy." His experience, over a trail marked with success in a variety of coaching situations, proved as much. Bruce broke into collegiate coaching at his alma mater (Oregon) and spent six seasons there (1966-71- ) under Jerry Frei. He twice coached athletes who won NCAA titles and his most well known protege was Bobby Moore (Ahmad Rashad), as well as current San 5-- 0 11, Chargers quarterback Dan Fouts. Later he moved to New Mexico State for a year (1972) and became offensive coordinator, working with current New York Giants quarterback Joe Pisarcik. The stop at New Mexico State was followed by a year in Logan (1973) with Krueger and then two seasons as the offensive backfield coach at USC. Working with squads which appeared in a Hose Bowl and a Liberty Bowl, he personally directed the efforts of premier runners Anthony Davis, Ricky Bell and others. Bruces first football success was realized as a Diego student-athlet- e. Born in Santa Monica, Calif., and educated in El Monte, he played for two years at Citrus Junior College (Glendora) and was the teams MVP as a fullback, his second year there. He later transferred to the University of Oregon and, as a fullback and linebacker, started for the Ducks fine 1960 Liberty Bowl team under the legendary Len with an injury in 1961 and Casanova. He red-shirt- was a BRUCE SNYDER senior in 1962. Following his graduation from Oregon, he taught and coached at Sheldon High School in Eugene for two years. He later returned to Oregon to complete work on his Masters degree and soon became a fulltime assistant coach to Frei. A strong organizer and motivator, Snyder is regarded as intense, thorough, efficient; the consummate professional. His pre-197-8 reorganization of his staff of assistants paid handsome dividends last year. Snyder and his wife Linda have two daughters: Jennifer (9) and Tracy (5). 7 |
