What gives a cross country ski its ability to grip for a kick on the flat or climb uphill are the waxes used on waxable skis or the unidirectional, serrated pattern or inlaid section of furlike material, with the nap pointed backwards, on the base of waxless skis. cross-count- cross-count- Bill Koch made history in 1976 by winning the silver medal in the 30km race at Innsbruck. He was the first U.S. skier ever to win an Olympic medal in a event. Koch has been training for ski racing in one way or another all his life. He used to race the bus to school on skis. In his dryland program, he combines running, rock climbing, long hikes, and bike rides with hard work like chopping wood and poundcoach Rob ing nails. U.S. Kiesel calls Koch one of the strongest skiers in the world" in terms of muscular power, crediting Koch's love of hard work combined with some specific strength training. Koch concentrates on interval training more than do most racers. One of his training theories is his personal approach to hill running. I always keep pushing up and over the top of the hill, as if the hill hadn't ended, he explains. That extra effort he has conditioned cross-countr- X-- himself to produce at the tops of hills gives him an edge over skiers who might unconsciously let up at the end of a climb. At 25, Koch is one of the U.S. Ski Team veterans. In the two seasons following the Olympics, Koch struggled with illnesses and demands on his time that disrupted his training 1 'ij schedule, but he started to come on strong again last spring in Sweden where he won a couple of races and placed 13th in the 30 km at the Swedish Ski Games. Like most of the top skiers in the world, he trains through the summer, aiming at consistency for the World Cup. After that, his training will be aimed toward aij Olympic peak. For Bill Koch and the other U.S. Team members, the road to the Olympics is a tough grind. You can help ease the way by sending your contribution to the U.S. Ski Team Fund, Box 100 M, Park City, Utah 84060. "''7 , ry t MinneCindy Nelson is a sotan who is given a good chance to win a medal in the downhill at the I960 Olympics. She already won a bronze, medal in that event at the Innsbruck Olympics in 1976, and she closed the 1978 World Cup season with a second-plac- e standing in downhill competition a U.S. record. She would like to do better than that, and people who know her believe that she will. Each year since 1972, her training has focused more and more directly on the strength and skills it takes to win Olympic and World Cup medals. She spends most of the year away from home traveling the World Cup circuit in the winter, and skiing at South American training camps cross-countr- y, in the summer. For the endurance and strength required by downhill racing, Cindy has put in years of dry land and circuit training. She varies distance running with wind sprints and bike riding. She follows a routine of specific exercises for legs, abdomen, and back muscles. Tags Pedersen, trainer for the U.S. Ski Team, finds Cindy's attitude toward conditioning astounding. "Very few athletes have Cindy's drive and her ability to concentrate." In 1977, after a good scoring record in World Cup downhill and giant slalom competition, Cindy broke her ankle at the finish line of a downhill race in Garmisch and was out of competition for the rest of the season. Her results in the following year are all the more impressive for coming after that injury. It demonstrated her determination to stick with ski racing. She'll give it her best shot at Lake Placid. For Cindy Nelson and the other members of the U.S. Ski Team, the road to the Olympics is steep. You can help smooth the way with a contribution to the U.S. Ski Team Fund, early-seaso- n the coach tells her to do a certain exercise once a day for the next four years, and she thinks that's what it will take to win, shell do it.
