Show I LOMOND BEACON, Oct. 5, 1978, Page 3 BEN At St. Benedicts Childbirth Education hove fun with bat Third graders in Mrs. Ruth Mae Mannings class at North Ogden Elementary School are going batty. They have been having a great time reading about bats, making paper bats, writing about bats, talking about bats and watching a real live bat. It all started when a bat, who was apparently lonely and bored, flew down Mrs. Mannings chimney, Santa Claus style, and into her room through the fireplace. Her husband, Dr. Nephi Manning, captured the furry little mammal and put it in a large bottle. It didn't appear to be sick, just lost, so Mrs. Manning took it to school, where it peers at the kids through the bottle. Suddenly the students had a compelling reason to WANT to look in the encyclopedia. They were excited about Science. Art became thrilling. And since they had been talking so much about a subject they were really interested in, they were anxious to do some creative writing about it! Mrs. Manning says she likes to give the students a lot of experiences, such as this, which enrich their learning. The are following examples of the creative writing done, completely unaided, by the kids in the class: The Bat by Bart Chatelain The bat in the night is like a black knight, and a He flew into it and stan- door. But the bat was already in the house, and the bat bit the witch on the neck and the end. Hie real story of Utah is her incomparable beauty and vacation opporutninty, says Milt Jolley, acting director of the Uah Travel Council. Through these visual presentations, we familiarize Utahns and others with our attractions. We also need to expose Utahns to the importance of tourism and its impact on our economy.
