Weber County School Districts second annual Spelling Bee, sponsored by an anonymous donor through the Weber School District Foundation, is underway. The top three spellers in grades 3 through 12 will have been selected Wednesday at Bonneville High School. The first place winners in grades 4 through 8 will then spell off to select one student to represent the district in the state competition April 29 and 30 m Salt Lake City. Each of the cone winners, who are competing in the district meet, will be honored at a banquet that night where Dr. T.H. Bell will speak to them and their parents and friends. Plaques will be given to the first place winners in the district competition. Other winners will receive a certificate. The state winner will be eligible to compete in a national spelling bee to be held June The spelling bee was named in honor of Mrs. Helen Perry and Mrs. Mercy Ledingham, retired Weber School District Teachers. More than 10,000 students have participated in the district wide spelling bee. The children in the primary grades were given a list of 200 practice words which the spelling bee started with. Then later spelling lists have been kept closely guarded as they were painstakingly compiled to avoid homonyms, abreviations, proper names and words which are difficult to hear or understand and matched with the grade level. Dwayne Manful is the chairman of the spelling competition on the elementary level while Tom Moore is directing the competition on the secondary level. The event this year will be the fourth annual Miss North Ogden Scholarship Pageant sponsored by the City of North Ogden. The city is again serving as sponsor of the pageant this year because it believes this provides a valuable contribution both to the community and to the young ladies who will enter the competition. The Miss North Ogden Scholarship Pageant will award $600 in prizes, but more importantly, it will provide the1 opportunity for the winner to continue to seek scholarship awards at the Miss Michael Bachman was awarded first place for the Most Original entry with a huge black topper. They modeled their creations in a zany fashion show. Winners were chosen in each room who then competed in one of four categories before the school and visiting parents.
