Letter to the editor Colleges, tech schools both needed by Melinda Sowerby debate has been going on the past few years about the value of a college education. A few years ago, a college education carried with a certain snob appeal. During much of the 1960 s, it was almost assumed that high school would be followed by college and many employers hired college educated people for very simple jobs. Recently, however, probably due to the high salaries paid tradesmen and a resurgence of the common people feeling prevalent through out the country trade and technical schools are booming and liberal arts college enrollment is decreasing throughout much of the country. Whether trade should will one day achieve the same snob status colleges once carried is yet to be seen. The terrible thing about either type of college rising to the forefront is that suddenly there are more people entering one profession than the profession can handle. Back a few years ago, engineering became a boom profession, until it became rather hard to succeed with a degree in that field. Next there was a boom in teachers and even today it is difficult to obtain a teaching position right out of college. Maybe one day soon, there will be an overload of plumbers or mechanics or carpenters. Its really too bad professions have to come into and go out of style like the latest fad in dressing, because people are needed in all areas, both in the liberal arts, college dominated fields and in the trades. They told us that the new residents wouldnt be able to afford to r their lawns, even though they will pay exactly the same water rates as the rest of us. One final matater: Mr Woods advocates requiring full disclosure to the purchaser by the developer concerning ground stability, along with a certificate from a licensed geologist. Leaving over-wate- aside the fact that soil stability is not the sole or even the major concern, there is the problem that there is not such thing as a licensed geologist in the State of Utah, and even if there were, this would not relieve the city of its responsiblity. Recent court decisions have established that by issuing a building permit, the city has implied consent to build and becomes liable to lawsuits growing out of geologic damage. Thus when the city fathers give an OK to build today, they obligate all of us to make good any damage that may occur years from now. Anyone who is interested in these matters is invited to attend our meetings. Unlike the City Council and the Planning Commission, we are not afraid to have outsiders at our meetings.
