The report, given to the council in their meeting of Jan. 11 revealed there was a four percent increase in crime in the city of North Ogden during 1976. Chief Carroll pointed out that the rate of many crimes has actually decreased, but the increase was mainly in misdemeanors, primarily in destruction of property. He told the council there was a decrease in the juvenile problem and said the cases of destruction of property were committed mainly by adults. He added that of the five representatives by Melinda Sowerby Did you know you can communicate by phone with your state representative or senator while he or she is in session? Well, neither did I. I thought letters or telegrams were the only way to let a legislator know your feelings while they were in session. Thats what I thought until a North Ogden resident brought me in a list of all the representatives with their home addresses and telephones listed. Not only does the list she brought have that, but she also included the telephone number to reach the house of representatives and the number of L. Glen Cottle, the representative to the North Ogden-PleasaView area. The number of the House of Representatives is This will connect you with a switchboard into the house. Rep. It would probably have more impact than a letter would. Residents can use a phone call to explain viewpoints on any bill or tell a representative or senator why you would like him or her to vote a certain way on a bill or talk over problems affecting your community. Representatives and senators should hear from their constituents, and in fact it is the only way for them to know the feelings of the people. So go ahead and call your state representatives. As concerned as I am about the abortion issue, this seeming violation of the separation of powers concerns me even more. OGDEN hearing has been scheduled for Feb. 8 to discuss the changing of the zone in the Scottsdale Subdivision region WASH., D.C. - U.S. Senator Jake Garn says he wants answers to some puzzling questions on the federal funding of abortions. In a letter to Department of Education and Health, Welfare Secretary David Matheews, Garn referred to a recent U.S. District Court ruling which ordered HEW to continue to fund abortions, the crazy ideas to come out of Washington, D.C., the nuttiest one of 1976 was the proposal by the Commission on Executive, Legislative and Judicial Salaries to raise the pay of Congressmen and government bosses anywhere from 22 percent to 47.6 percent in 1977. In cash figures, that comes to a minimum pay raise of $12,900 for some, all the way up to a $20,000 raise per year for others. In round numbers, if Congress goes ahead and approves the raise, it will cost American taxpayers at least another $130 million per year. Commission urges that Specifically, the the salary of the Vice President be raised from the present $65,600 to $80,000 (or a raise of $14,400 a year) the same amount for the Speaker of the House; for members of Congress, an increase of $12,900 a year (from $44,600 to $57,500 a year) ; Federal Judges would be given a raise of $20,000 a year (giving them a salary of $62,000 a year) and so on for all Cabinet members, agency heads, Under Secretaries, Assistant Secretaries, and bureau chiefs. of Our compatriot William Loeb, the Manchester (New Hampshire) Union Leader What an incommented with his usual restraint: credible piece of arrogance these recommendations are! At a time when we are trying to combat inflation, our rulers in Washington want to give themselves a 25 percent pay raise. Somebody has to be out of his mind down there! Mr. Loeb also reminds us that the proposed raise in pay exceeds the entirely year income of most wage earners. To put it another way, the present pay enjoyed by members of Congress ($44,600 per year) is about $30,000 a year more than the average income of most wage earners. And that doesnt begin to take into consideration all of the fringe benefits such as free hair cuts, medical care, postage and stationery allowances, travel expenses, and all the rest. And now they want even more?! There is only one thing to do: pick up pencil and paper, or get out the typewriter, or get on the telephone, and let the Congressmen and Senators from your state know how you feel about the matter. It is time for Congress to stop ripping off taxpayers back home. Chief Carroll explained this was due to selective enforcement, meaning radar was set up in the same place at the same time daily. Chief Carroll also told the council adults arrested on charges of destruction of property, some had more than one count against them and he said there was one adult with 18 cases of destruction of property against him.
