Show Ben Lomond inA :sJ Bliss 6. Summer football leagues are flourishing in California and are drawing good crowds. Coaches and players are excited about the program and what it is doing for fall football. Each school, large or small, fields a team of seven players. On offense, there is a center to snap the ball, a quarterback to pass it and five eligible receivers to catch it. It is strictly a passing game, there is no running from scrimmage The quarter-bac- k f has three and seconds to get the ball in the air and he is timed on each play Once the ball is caught, the runner moves downfield until he is touched by an opposing player Team credit is given for pass completions or interceptions and for touchdowns scored. The offensive team is given four downs to move the ball ten yards or give it up Field goals and punts are not allowed, regardless of field position. In a typical game the offensive team launches its passing attack against the passing defense of linebackers, defensive backs and safeties Speed and agility on both sides of the line play an important role in the outcome of the game. Schools in the Ogden Valley are one-hal- showing mixed emotions about summer football. Roy and Weber Bonneville time-consumi- and hard-presse- This corner endorses the summer league for football in Utah, but I dont think that Northern Utah is quite ready for it. There are too many doubts and unanswered questions. In time the leagues will become popular m our state, but not until someone breaks the ice, and shows that it can succeed I look for the Salt Lake Schools to get touch football started, and perhaps m a year or so, the schools of Region One will jump onto the band wagon Change or a venture into the unknown is frightening to us humans. . 7JU Bos V' I la 1 s- setter Jun - HILL AIR FORCE BASE The Ninth Annual Hill AFB Comptrollers Day of Golf will start with a bang June 16 as a matter of fact, there will be two shotgun starts one in the morning and one in the afternoon This annual event where former employees, retirees and present Comptroller employees renew or make new friendships, is planned for the good and those who aren't so good golfers, according to Dorothy Bailey, - f Golf Committee Chairperson. We hope all present and former Comptroller employees will participate in this day of fun and friendship, Dorothy said. She said that no one will be embarrassed by being matched up with the pro golfer because groups will be formed considering what the golfer shoots To sign up for the event, Dorothy individuals should contact related, committee members. School favor the program, is undecided, while Clearfield and Ogden High School are not too interested. Proponents of the summer league stress the need of such a program to improve passing and receiving skills, develop talent and condition athletes for fall football Those opposing summer football, argue that the program would be too for young men who are already busily engaged in offseason baseball, basketball, softball High expenses, scheduling problems and lack of interest. Those favoring the program argue that football should be entitled to summer action along with basketball and baseball, and pointed out that a Northern Utah League would eliminate the need of travel to Salt Lake and elsewhere Two or three d teams, alone, would be to survive the season. Insurance for injuries and the likes, would be worked out by BYU personnel, according to advocates of the summer league program 'fer. North Ogden citizens should be proud of their recreation program and the parents of the children who are playing should support the program by attending as many games as possible. |
