I May 31. 1979, Page 3 Summor vacation cutstltuto bftletm .Hi This byLynnArave summer it is predicted that gasoline, the lifeblood of all vacations by automobiles will not only be quite expensive, but that its availability will also be limited thus making long trips to Southern Utah or out of state quite difficult and uncertain. However, Great Salt Lake Park can be somewhat of a summer vacation substitute to Ogden area residents since it is located practically in our own As backyards. hard as it is to believe, there are a number of Ogden area residents who have not only never been to Great Salt Lake Park (Antelope Island), but who have also never so much as immersed their little toe into the waters of the world famous and unique Great Salt Lake. It is probably a fact that more Ogden area residents have been to visit Yellowstone Park than to Utah's own Great Salt Lake Park. 1969 The Great Salt Lake Park originally opened in 1969. It is located on Antelope Island, the largest of the Lakes nine major islands. Antelope Island is found west of Layton and Clearfield in the Southeast corner of the Lake. Antelope is 15 miles long and 5 miles wide, having an area of 25,918 acres, about 2,000 of which make up Great Salt Lake Park at the Northern tip of ' the island. The park is open from 7 a.m. until 10 p.m. daily and can be reached by going west on Antelope Drive (1700 South) from Clearfield past the south side of the Freeport Center and down through Syracuse to a 7.5 mile long GREAT SALT LAKE 1 K causeway to the island itself.
