Show ( f BEN LOMOND BEACON, May 24, 1 979, Page 4 Afllh) Dtfk At the culmination of another school year, recognition for outstanding achievements are awarded to deserving individuals. The Ben Lomond Beacon is no different! Stahle Publications and the Ben Lomond Beacon announce: The Weber High Outstanding Athletic Achievement Award. Recipients of the Award were judged according to unusual talent, ability and achievments. Personal citizenship was also considered in each case. Winners are: Mark RICK SCADDEN Montgomery, Bruce Thorpe, Scott Martini and Rick Scadden. Mark Montgomery Mark Montgomery was the number one choice. Mark has constantly been recognized for his outstanding athletic achievments. Among his awards are the gold watch award for being the outstanding Athlete at Weber High. Mark has lettered in every sport he has participated in which include football, basketball and track. Mark was a tight end on the football team and was a good one at that! Mark has saved many a game for the Warrior team by using his leaping and catching skills. The most exciting game Mark had a hand in was the 1977-7- 8 homecoming game. With only seven seconds remaining in the game, Steve Trawick threw a desperation pass and Mark was on the recieving end. Mark caught it on the 40 yard line and evaded would-b- e tacklers to make the winning touchdown. During his senior year, he has added other exciting moments to the Warriors football memories In track, Mark has always been a strong point getter on the team. Mark threw the shot put consistantly over 48 feet. He even participated in the decathalon and faired very well in that event. Marks specialty is the high jump. He placed third in state last week by jumping 66. Just off his region and school record of 67. To jump over 6 feet is an accomplishment in itself, but jumping ago if a high 67. super! Many years school high jumper went over 62 he was setting records right and left! Now, high school jumpers are over 7 feet. Mark has the potential of being a top class college jumper and most likely will be. Basketball is Marks love. Mark can be considered to be in higher echelon of Weber High basketball players. Statistic wise, he is the best. He averaged 10.4 points per game and a rebounds in his sophomore year. point average and 13 rebounds per game average his junior year and an 18 point average and averaged 13 rebounds per game in his senior year. He scored 927 points, and pulled down 775 rebounds in his basketball career at Weber High. According to Coach Cnnnollv, I have never heard him complain about anything the whole time I have worked with him. You would think that is someone was here for three years he could find SOMETHING to complain about! Mark is quiet and subdued when approached, but one can quickly recognize his genuiness as a mature manwhen taking a closer look. Mark is planning to attend Snow College next fall. A 12 16 . . In track and field, Bruce can be considered as weird. Some long time veterans call his style special. What ever the case may be, his high jumping style is different. Bruce has always been a practicer of the western role. This style once was the most accepted and most used form until the Fosbury flop revolutionized high jumping. Bruce has been quit? successful too. Bruce has limped over 65 and was another consistant point getter for the Warrior track team. Although he didnt place in state, he did place second in the region only to Mark Montgomery. Thorpe is another one of Webers gentle giants. Bruce conducts himself like a man at all times on and off the field. Bruce is planning to attend Ricks college next year to play football fot that institution. SCOTT MARTINI Scott Martini was chosen as the third choice for the special award. Scott plays football and runs track. He is a super athelete and has proved it many times. His potential is unlimited and, if he works hard, could prove to be an exceptional athelete. Scott has an abundance of talent in both sports, he does show unusual strength in football. He is a very quick wide reciever. Scott can streak down sidelines, scream past defenders and cut so quick that defenders become puzzled! Scott has recieved more touchdown passes than any other reciever at Weber this year. During the year, Scott played with an injured shoulder. That didnt hinder Scotts performance. In fact, he even played better! When Scott runs track, he also does it with class. He placed fifth in state competition last week in the HO high hurdles. It seems like magic to watch him glide over the hurdles clearing the hurdle with less than an inch to spare. Each step placed in its proper place thus getting the maximum of each step. Scott also runs the 330 intermediate hurdles. He placed high in region in that event too. Scott is unsure of his plans for the future, but rest assured that some college is going to snatch him up. During his career at Weber, he has helped Weber in almost every cause. He has been a great help said one of his former coaches.. Rick Scadden, the fourth chosen to recieve the prestigious award plays baseball and basketball. Rick was a starting guard for Weber and has contributed immensly to Webers team through his ball handling. Rick has played all three years in the warrior basketball system. Rick is a devoted player and athelete. Rick was relied on heavily for ball handling and shooting. Just this year he scored 135 points. With Weber losing so many close games, by one or two points, 135 is quite a few points! When Rick plays baseball, he can pitch and he can play the infield. Rick is quick to the ball and quick out of the glove. Because of his strong pitching arm, Rick can throw the ball very fast to first, or any base for that matter. On the hitting end, Ricks percentage was well above .275. He hits a right handed-pitche- r as easily as a would always be Rich pitcher. seen on base. However he got there, it didnt matter to him, he got there! Rick will be seen at second base the majority of the time. The fifth spot was the hardest of all! Because the votes were so close, a single person wasnt chosen for the fifth and final spot. The nominees for the final spot were considered to be KATHY BARKER .. . t left-hand- Bruce Thorpe, number two choice for Weber High Outstanding Athletic Achievment Award is another football , basketball and track participant. Attributed to Bruces ac- in football are: team, Stahle team and Ray W. Publications Price Award. Bruce is a stout guard and has set a school record in the most defensive points. It wasnt uncommon to see him sack the opposing quarterback at least three time a game. complishments Region 1 all-st- ar all-st- ar Football is his thing! Bruce also plays basketball..very well too. He has started for Weber for two years and has scored over 300 points and ripped down 294 rebounds. He was consistantly pulling down rebounds. He was either with the ball or near by it, (a good place to be when playing for Coach Conolly!) SCOTT MARTINI and football were twin brothers. BRUCE THORPE tied. The winners are: (in alphabetical order) Brian Ballif, Dave Green, Shawn Miller, Kurt Stauffer and Mark Storey. All winners helped greatly in the cause of Weber High. Without them, Weber wouldnt be where they are today. These athletes here not only helped Weber, but every athelete that has played. They not only helped Weber grow, but have improved themselves also. and basketball tactics. finished the year as one of Weber High s top gymnasts. j I .' ' iU. vT V w -- r T ?! 5 I TBS- I - . . A.
