Show i I BEN LOMOND BEACON. Feb. 15, 1979, Page 2 loeecoin Mymiray i?'Wlbr By Sharon Kendell There is much that can be said about todays high school, both good and bad. Adults have fond memories of happy times in high school, and visa versa for bad times. A general opinion today is that the high schools our parents attended were and the good schools times were the good ol and evidenced by days, nostalgic movies, television shows and radio songs that sing the praises of a bygone era when kids were clean and life was better. Indeed, this wave of nostalgia has caught up almost everyone, including today's younger generation. But why do we enjoy the past and think it was so much better? Our high school days now will be the good ol days to the next generation, and the general opinion must change from the feeling that the quality of education and the students it produces is decreasing. As a student at Weber High school, Im here to show a side of my school that many dont see. It seems as if the only events that get a lot of publicity are negative, while the vast majority of excellence at Weber goes unnoticed by members of the community. Weber is known throughout the valley and. the State for its outstanding academic excellence. The results of the last Stanford Achievement test showed scores that were well above the national average in every area, and higher than any school in his area. A general push for awareness by the administration will raise those scores even higher next year. Weber can boast of 5 National Merit Semifinalists and 3 Commended students, as well as 4 Sterling Scholars who placed in the top three in their respective areas at the State Sterling Scholar competition. Each year, Weber students receive more than $100,000 in scholarship offers. All the scholastic programs sponsored by school departments add to the outstanding atmosphere, providing ample opportunity for students to be involled and to excell. For example the Science department sent to the In8 students ternational Science Fair in Anaheim last year, and took more awards overall than . most The competing. The students here are proud of their school and are eager to show that pride to others, There simply is not room here to express my pride in Weber or to list all the examples of excellence, but maybe youve seen a different, better side. Our Foreign Language departments do very well each year at the Forein Language Festivals. Webers athletic programs have always been outstanding, offering many opportunities to talented young students. How many in the community know that we took the Region Sportsmanship trophy in football this year? Or that our girls took the State title in volleyball in December? That we aided up 2nd in State last year in wrestling, and are 2nd in the Region right now going into State? We admit we have our losseb, but the school spirit is so high that we bounce right back. This is largely due to the efforts of the Warrior Pep Club and Rally Association, to our dedicated cheerleaders and Tallymen, and to the spirited, involved studentbody who really care. On a more personal level, it is the individual students that make Weber great and help us stay on top . Along with Utah, South; Dakota too passed the bill. In ' all, that makes 26 states that have passed such a resolution. The government has plunged into such an uncon trolable' state that relief seems For example, in 1966, 33 per cent of all the governments money was uncon trolable unless there was a change in law, in 1977, 48 per cent of that money can not be cut without a change inlaw.
