On the menu were Bewitching Blueberry Pancakes, Witches Brew (fruit punch). Goblin Bacon and Wise Owl Syrup (vIts the same color as the wise owls we made in class.). Teacher Mrs. Margaret Olsen said, Weve been reading the Old Witch stories. She rescues the Tea Room by making Bewitching Blueberry Pancakes. The three first grade teachers, (Mrs. Olsen, Mrs. Charlene Mann, and Mrs. Bonnie Germer) plan together every Monday, and this is one of their joint activities. Mrs. Mann said, Theres a lot to be learned from ATTENTIVE COOKS breviations. It expands their vocabulary. They learned -that this was a brunch a meal between breakfast and lunch. Mrs. Germer displayed booklets the children had made o n Rules for a Happy Halloween. They included such suggestions as: ' Say thank you. The children learned how to read a recipe, how to measure, the steps of a table setting, recipe, manners and cooperation. Even the teachers learned. 3 , Mrs. Olsen decided to bring her own pans next time, and Mrs. Mann said, Next time Id have a room mother. The real magic came when it was time to eat all the - food disappeared. The young people took turns measuring ingredients and mixing. They worked quite independently, though the others and the teacher watched closely to be sure everything was right, only giving suggestions when held was needed. How do you measure to teaspoon of cinnamon with a teaspoon? You guestimate,, Mrs. Hales said, guiding the student to estimate the amount. In discussing the value of the cooking experience, she said, Good will is worth a lot carrying over into other learning situations. There is a lot of social learning, she said, about behavior in groups and good manners. Many students are in kind of an isolated social situation, and this activity gave them a chance to Interact While the nut cake baked, the class read the story, Old Witch and the Polka Dot Ribbon, by Wendy and Henry Devlin. Then, to practice writing, and so they could iry cooking at home, they each copied the recipe.
