Show Sporfstacular Thursday, One (day. The Royals lost six of their eight games this year. It was Coach Jacklins first losing season as a head coach in his illustrious coaching career. Bonneville bombed the Royals 3 and did it without the services of superstar Marv Ellis who was injured. Ellis suffered a but had shoulder separation, mended sufficiently to play in the Roy game, but Coach Thom Budge wisely kept him out of the lineup. The Lakers had to prepare for their game against East High School, and figured they could beat Roy without Ellis. Cory Sylvester came up with his best game of the season in leading his Lakers to 395 total yards and 45 big points. Bonneville had 267 rushing yards, and passed for an additional yards to completely annihilate the Royals. The Lakers started out slowly, with Ted Rickard 45-1- kicking a 45 yard field goal, and then Sylvestor hit Gilbert Ballingham with a couple of touchdown passes to lead Roy 17-- 7 at halftime. The Lakers scored three times in the third quarter on touchdown jaunts of three and ten yards by Mike Smith and a one yard run by Brent Cundick. Junior Jeff Fowler capped of the Laker scoring with a 26 yard touchdown run in the final quarter. Rickard booted six consecutive P.A.T.S, and was credited with nine Laker points. Roy scored its first touchdowns on passes to Brad McCaulley, Mitch Brown and Chris Jensen, who scored on a 75 yard pass (day from quarterback Bert Rich. Rich had good passing success in hitting McCualley with four aerials, Brown with six, Mike Allison and Jim Bertagnolli with two each, and Willard Cragun and Ken Huddleston with one each. Cory Sylvestor completed 10 of 21 passes for 119 yards, and two touchdowns. His favorite target was Gilbert Ballingham. Bonneville picked up 20 first downs in passing and rushing, and made shambles of the Roy defense. The Lakers moved on to meet in a playoff game at Washington Terrace. The the game, the Royals stopped Bonneville on the Roy 21 yard line, and mounted a surge that gave them a touchdown with 3:26 left to be played. The big gainer was a 30 yard pass to Lance Jorgenson, and Gary Ashley stutter stepped in from ten yards out for the T.D. The Lakers tried desperately to get back in the ball game and went to the air. Bart Hadley plucked off a Laker pass in the flat and raced 27 yards for the clinching Royal touchdown. By beating Bonneville, the Royals captured a piece of the region championship. Sky View beat Roy last week, and had previously been beaten by Bonneville, which, until Tuesday, was undefeated. The three teams, in sharing the league title, gave a preview of things to come in the next two years of football in Region One. There were many Royal heroes in Tuesdays game, but Eric Aragon was credited with M. V.P. honors by his coaches and teammates. His second effort running, especially in the fourth quarter, kept the drive alive for Roys go ahead touchdown. The Lakers scored their first touchdown with 3:13 left to be played in the third quarter, and t went for a conversion and missed. The touchdown was set up on an East fumble on the Leopards 23 yard line, and in five plays, the Lakers got their touchdown, with Marvin Ellis running two-poin- they scored in two plays to lead 20-- 6. game and now odvance m SaGiwifttlay the last three yards. Ellis scored again, on a 22 yard run, with 8:44 left in the game, and the Laker defense got stingy and protected its 4 lead to the 17-1- gun.
