Sue Daw is a sophomore from New Mexico Coach Jane Miner has once again called her troops together for another eventful Weber State - College Womens basketball "season. Last week the team got into the thick of it with practice getting' more intense as each week goes by. The outlook is bright with several top veterans returning and some top rated freshmen getting a chance to show their stuff on the Wildcat hardwoods. The team will try to forget the closing moments of last season when they were tied for first place going into the last week of play. The Wildcat women were upset by lowly Texas Ell Paso and had to settle for a tie for second place. Weber has never won in Ell Paso and you can bet it will be a major goal for Coach Miner and the Wildcats. In the game against Ell Paso a year ago, two top players were sick, some uniforms were left home, contacts were lost and the team wasnt able to practice when they got there. That had to be the worse defeat of my coaching career, said Miner. With the services of Ann Skyline High School who gives tiie team added leadership. For those restless fans that walked away from the game at the middle of the fourth quarter. . . tough beans! You missed the most exciting game the Iron Horse has ever seen. The ga me started the usual way, three downs, punt. . three downs punt until finally Ogden broke the monotony and drove down and scored. Unfortunately for the Tigers, the PAT missed, and, as Howard Cosell would say it, It could be what killed the cats in the end! Luckily for the fans, he wasnt there for he would probably have said it all afternoon! The half ended with the score 06 for the Ogden Tigers. The third quarter was again like the first as it was "Of spent trading punts. The fourth quarter was much more exciting when late in the period, Ogdens punt return man returned a punt 74 yards. Only to have it called back by a dipping call and nullifying the score. This is another time when Howard Cosell would have spoken! The Scots defense held and when they got the ball bade, they went to work. With only 3:13 seconds left in the game, senior Mark Davis led the Scots down to score in only 31 seconds. The PAT missed and you know who has spoken again. The Tigers drove down in to Scots territory in fiddgoal range With only a few seconds left, the field god attempt was stifled by guard Dave Johnson. It finally left them in overtime. Over time After a much needed three minute rest, the overtime ITS)1' omnjra period went like this: Ben Lomond won the toss and had four downs to score. 1st down quarterback Davis was for a lass of four yards. Second and third downs were both incomplete passes. Fouih down brought the mnmjmt of truth for the Scots. Davis threw a looper to flanker Rhett Brooks and the Scots took the lead 136. Ogden fell almost into the same pattern! First down the Q.B. was sacked, second and third downs were incomplete and the Tigers were now faced with their moment of truth! The pass was complete but the receiver was tackled on the four yard line. The entire Scotty bleacher emptied on the field as they had narrowly beaten their Iron Horse rival 136. if |
