Paja 6 Curtains close oh season by Keith Duncan : The 1978-7- 9 Weber High wrestling season officially came to a close last Tuesday evening in the schools' cafeteria. Weber High did indeed enjoy one of the finest years in wrestling that the school has ever known. The Warriors finished fourth in state after finishing second in the Region One and they did it by going undefeated in seven matches. Tears of joy and outbursts of laughter filled the room as the teams captains spoke first. Bruce Finch, who finished fifth in state this season, pointed out that the team wouldnt die in several of their crucial matches and he The compared it to life. guys on this team . have learned something and not many of us will be quitters throughout our lives, stated Bruce. He also pointed out the honor it was for the team to finish fourth in state, saying, And thats not too bad. Before the sailor captain took his chair he praised everyone who had the smallest part in helping the team excell. Bruce took time to mention Neil Brown, who has been the manager for the team this past year. He also paid attention to the up- coming sophomores and juniors and encouraged them to be their best. Weber High wound up another highly successful grappling campaign two weeks ago and now must look toward the future. Smiles came across Coach Richard Hoopes face recently, when his sophomore wrestlers came home with the team trophy in the Sophomore Region One meet. Needless to say the future success of wrestling looks bright. In the 98 pound category, Rick Tanner a sophomore will come back next year as probably the favorite in Region One. Kevin Johnson will supply ample depth, he placed first in the sophomore meet. Keith Bingham wrestled 98 In Junior varsity meets. Tony Cruz will be missed after a superb wrestling season at 105. He finished fourth in state and second in region. Tim Story, Kevin Johnson, and Kevin Hill all some action In sophomore or Junior varsity meets. At 111 DeVon Robinson was lope. He was recond In region. Bart Bushman claimed first place in sophomore region. Tim Story and Bart saw split action during the J.V. season. Brent Schvanedveldt also saw some action at ill. Dave Free! on and Brad Story are both Juniors and both will bring solid competition to the 119 spot. Brian Burger was fourth In the sophomore region meet at Ms weight. Brian Johnson and Scott Johnson also saw action at lit. Mike Crootegoed will graduate after a fine wrestling season. John Rood placed first in the sophomore region meet. Dave SManey also wrestled in the 126 category. Bruce Finch won 20 matches for Weber at his weight this season and will be considered one of Weber's e best. Clint Cooper took second In the sophomore region meet. Jim Grootegoed and Kerry Allen also participated in this weight. Stu Johnson and Paul Mackley split time at 138. Stu and Paul will graduate this year and will be missed. Andre Malan is Junior and has been voted by his teammates, along with Brad Story and Danny Eastman, to be one of the captains next season. Kenny Taylor also saw action at this weight. Brad Howell will be missed at 145, but Brad Summers, Randy GoodeU, and Bruce Illium will all compete for this spot next season. Richard Cooper graduates this year from the slot, but Eric Burton, Howard Carpenter, and Brad Summers will fight for the spot. Danny Eastman was the main entry at 167. Dennis Singleton took second in the sophomore region meet. Max Wester guard was also a wrestler at this weight. all-tim- by Howell. He singled out Stu Johnson and Bruce Finch, two wrestlers be admired greatly in the latter part of the season. He described both as true . champions. Coach James and Hoopes were also given added credit time they had spent ' in supporting him as a Weber High wrestler. Coach Hoopes and James next handed out letterman certificates to 22 wrestlers, They included Tony Cruz, DeVon Robinson, Howard Carpenter, Steve Poorman, Scott Cottrell, Mark Storey, Roger Cooper, Brad Howell, Paul Mackley, Bruce Finch, Mike Grootegoed, Kim Taylor, Brad Story, Danny Eastman, Brad Summers, Joe Oram, Brian Harris, Bart Bushman, Eric Burton, .
