By Keith Duncan It isnt till about Turkey time in November that the benches that surround the basketball court at Weber High get dusted off, but the 1978 coed volleyball team has recently contributed to the premature dusting schedule Autumn fans who used to reside at the ninth hole at White Bam and others still shivering from the chilly and slowed-dowgirdiron game, now have something to get excited about. finish line Even those stand-byer- s are turning out to see the 78 eduition of Warrior volleyball And to think they dont even complain, even when they must pay to get n cross-countr- in y now-a-da- Needless to say the Weber High coed volleyball team has created big waves this season and to think the'fun has only begun The fun doesnt stop in seeing how well the team in playing and or how the spectators are getting involved, but its a serious speculation when one stops to consider that this team may be the best the school has ever had Kiem Heads Volleyball Jan Kiem doesnt care to take a whole lot of credit for the teams success, but credit is due where credit is deserved She is the ringleader and head coach of Region Ones undefeated leaders Coach Kiem is a former volleyball player all-st- herself, performing in a respectable career at Weber State You have to get involved with the players and learn to love each one of those kids Right now they mean the world to me and they mean a lot to each other They know were in this together, win or lose, commented Coach Kiem Last week Weber bumped off Bonneville for the second time this season and upped their Region One Add another mark to victory to that total and then tack on the teams only defeat, a heart-breakto the Hillcrest Huskies Hillcrest has been regarded by most as the team to beat m the state playoffs and the Warriors would like nothing else but a chance to avenge n defeat the Braves Taste Defeat Bountifuls girls are the other top squad in the league The match between Weber and the Braves was no doubt the most exciting sporting event that has taken place so far at Weber pre-seaso- n 8-- 0 pre-seaso- High Not to take anything away from the ment sports, but even the mice in the cracks and the spiders nesting in the rafters couldnt but help tune in on the action The Warrior women came from behind in the final set to score an overtime victory over the talented Braves The scoring in games went as There and follows, wasnt any standout hero, it was the team's best team effort of the season Both teams played as if theyre very lives were riding on the outcome, which will set the stage for another Weber-Bountifconfrontation on November 7 at Bountiful In order to win a volleyball, the champ must notch no less than 30 points in two or three games that go 15 points a piece Weber has amassed a whopping 240 points to their opponents 138 points through the Bonneville game The record can speak for itself Dont count on a break in the success either, the JV team, despite dropping their first contest in four years this season, is primed and ready to pick up the winning tradition Seniors Lead Team Six seniors are the backbone of the team with three more talented juniors playing key roles Ann Rackham, Holly Rich, Lisa Godell, Robin Lindquist, Leann Hadley, and Christ Wnde give the Warriors three years of valuable experience a piece Each see sizeable amounts of playing time with talented pretty well even distributed Kristen Frazier, Karen Garner, and Mae Miya give the Weber some extra Junior power The girls take their playing serious as voiced by Kristen, Were playing good, but we can do better In state youve got to play your best Other junior players include Jams Hogge and Betsy Calderwood These two girls along with sophomores Desmse Garner, Sharon Bashford, Ann Parsons, Carol Allen, Lisa Vaughn, and Kathy Anderson make up the juimor varsity team 17-1- 5 13-1- 15-1- Over 3 hours a day is the practice time these girls put m from the start of school m August till the commencement of the boys basketball season With all the support, the excitement, and the devoted dedication of a coach and 17 young women dont count out a state championship Wr I j - i- ra-- 4 $???- , - i 4' -- S ' - t m Z 'v.
