A squad that often started three freshmen, had no seniors, and only three juniors on the roster had to benefit a great deal from experience. In spite of their youth and competition against topflight opponents, the Wildcat Women ended the season with a 16-- 9 overall record. The season has been very inconsistent, even frustrating at times, but I expected that with all commented of our freshmen, Weber State womens coach Jane Miner. Its such an adjustment from high school to college, especially when you consider the level of competition, but Im pleased with the outcome. Our kids work hard, hustle like crazy, and have super attitudes. They also play extremely well. Weber State started the season by defeating their first two opponents, Utah State on the road and Idaho State at home. The Women lost their third game in overtime, however, against the second-ranked team in the Conference the University of Utah with an 1 score. It was then tournament time for Weber, as the team participated in three consecutive tourneys in late December and January. The Women finished third in the Montana State Invitational, second in the Copper Classic, and third in the Cougar Classic. They also managed to pick up a few honors along the way, as Kathy Miller and Penny Wanberg were named to alltourney teams, while Ann Avondet was named twice to the team. Si. 104 9 GETEM G Conference competition. It wasnt long before they had racked up nine wins to only four losses and qualified for Region 7 competition. Im so pleased to be in said regional competition, Coach Jane Miner. Even to take fourth in this Conference is an We have the accomplishment. youngest and team in the Conference, and when you look at what were playing against, I think we have done extremely well. The Weber Women ended the season scoring an average of 80.4 least-experienc- w percentage. In addition to Millers impressive statistics, three more of Webers starters ended regular season play scoring in double Freshmen figures. Penny Wanberg and Jenny Wilkening e for average 11 the year, while junior guard Ann Avondet added 10.4. Coach Miner, pleased with the results of this year, is also very optimistic about the next. The best part is that were only going to get better. A lot depends on our recruiting, because we do need a little more size; but we should do twice as well, because we now have a year of experience behind us. We made a lot of mistakes this year that we wont next year. Well be just that much smoother and faster so look out, folks. In the last three years in conference play the Lobos have been and now 11-- Coach has Marpe developed a running team at UNM with the emphasis on fast break offense and full court pressure defense. As a team they averaged 46.2 rebounds, the same as their opponents. They shot 44 percent from the field and hit 66 percent of their shots from the line. Kathy Miller finished regular season play with an average of 28.2 points. She hit 52 percent of her shots from the field, while making 144 of 183 free throws for a fine 79 percentage mark. In Conference play Miller led all scorers throughout the entire season and ended up with a 29.8 e average. She was also the third-hig- h rebounder with 13.9 boards per game. Kathy hit 150 of 290 field goals for a percentage mark of .517 and a fifth-plac- e rating in the league. Kathy and Weber States freshman guard, Mechell Fowden, both ranked in the top ten in the Conference also in free-thro- in 9-- 4 the conference. |
