No. - A HIGHLY HAVE 3rd Columbus 3-- 2 Perrins Chronicle Reporter William Frederick Cody, Buffalo better known as Bill, is visualized by some people as slaughtering buffalo by the scores daily. As a matter of fact, however, he received his nickname from having contracted with the Kansas Pacific Railway Company to supply their employees with meat. In the fulfilling of this contract, the mighty buffalo hunter is said to have killed 4,280 buffalos in 18 months, 1867 to 1888. He was required to kill only 24 buffalo a day, but in his greatest hunt which was a match affair with another buffalo bunter he recorded his greatest kill single day, which was 69 buffalo. 1974 CHEV CAMARO. "day 24 hams and 12 humps," as only the hump and hind quarters of each animal were utilized. The work of providing the $500 731-34- could well afford to 773-184- f meat was exceedingly dangerous as the Indians were very troublesome. Codys duties required a journey of from five to ten miles from the railroad every day to secure the game. His outfit consisted of his celebrated buffalo horse Brigham, and his favorite rifle, Lucretia Borgia. He was accompanied by only one man, with a light wagon drawn by a team of mules to haul the meat back to camp. It wasnt long before he acquired a considerable reputation as a buffalo hunter, and it was at this time that the title of Buffalo Bill was conferred upon him by the railroad hands who regarded him as a hero who had many exciting and hairbreadth escapes from the Indians. ARMY OFFICERS ARRANGE While Cody was employed by the railroad to furnish meat, the Army officers at Fort Hays arranged for a buffalo-killin- g contest. They matched Cody against Billy Comstock, a famous scout and hunter employed by Fort Wallace. Officers at Fort Wallace thought Billy Comstock had more right to the title of Buffalo Bill, and they raised apurseof $500 for the winner of the buffalo hunt. Posters were put up at the railroad stations along the new line and an excursion train was run from St. Louis, Missouri, carrying more than 100 passengers, including wife. Codys of the old Wording posters, records show, were as follows: GRAND EXCURSION TO FORT SHERIDAN, KANSAS PACIFIC RAILROAD BUFFALO SHOOTING MATCH FOR $500 A SIDE TO DECIDE THE CHAMPIONSHIP OF THE WORLD BETWEEN BILLY COMSTOCK, THE FAMOUS SCOUT, AND W F. CODY, BUFFALO KILLER FOR THE KANSAS ' PACIFIC RAILROAD ri Twenty miles east of" Sheridan the buffalo were plentiful and the prairies were level enough so that all could see the chase. At this point the party left the train and rode to the hunting ground in wagons and on horseback to see the world- - championship buffalo hunting match. The wager was $500 a side for Comstock and Cody, and the man who killed the greatest number of buffalo from horseback in one day of eight hours was to be declared the winner of the match. A referee was to follow each hunter to count his buffalo. Both hunters were to enter the herd at the same time. Cody rode Brigham and used his needle-guLucretia Borgia, a breechloading Springfield rifle of His rival, .50 caliber. used a Henry Comstock, rifle. The buffalo hunters each made three runs at the buffalo herd. In the first run, Cody killed 38 buffalo and Comstock bagged 23. In the second run, against a herd which was composed mostly of cows and calves, Cody killed 18, and Comstock overlooking Denver and the plains, where there is a memorial museum and an art gallery with more mementos and an art gallery killed 14. In the third and last run, Cody gave an exhibition of his skill and horsemanship by leaving both his saddle and bridle behind. He en- tered the herd and quickly killed 13. Comstock shot only nine. This ended the buffalo shooting contest with a total of 69 buffalo for Cody, and only 46 for Comstock. Cody then was declared by the referee to be the world champion buffalo hunter of the plains, and to have proved his right to the championship title of Buffalo Bill. He set a world record which never before or since has been equaled. It is so recorded at Le Claire, Iowa boyhood home of the famous hunter, folk hero and super showman, and site of the Buffalo Bill Museum. The museum was established in June, 1957, and incorporated under the laws of Iowa as a non-prof- it organization. This organization was formed to a historical operate museum, preserving documents . and mementos from LeCIaires historic past, known throughout the nation as a rafting town and home of pilots, and the birthplace of the famous Buffalo Bill E low-calor- well-teste- cure. own THE SWORD OF SHANNARA by Terry Brooks.
