Sam Bernard Jins made his debut ns a star and will hhortl.v como into the Bijou theater in this city for a run, tho length of which will naturally bo determined by tho popularity of tho vehicle, The Marquis of Michigan, in which ho appears. Tho Marquis of Michigan is tho work of Glen MncDonough and Edward W. Townsend, tho latter being tho author of tho Chi m m io Fadden sketches. The piece has little or no plot, but it contains a number of quaint conceits, which, with tho inimitable drolleries of Bernard, should be sufficient to plant the new star firmly in tho list of popular favorities. I saw tho play in Newark tho other night, and, while no member of tho company was thoroughly easy in his or her lines, it can bo seen that there is a great deal of material which will bo extremely valuable when tho people get down to working more rapidly. Sam Bernard enacts the role of ayoungGerman-America- n artist upon whoso back is painted the will of a man who has been mortally wounded by brigands in Italy. This, of course, sounds very much like Rider Haggards Mr. Meesons Will, but it is the fact that one first suspects a plagiarism and then is agreeably surprised to see tho unique touch given to it that makes this episode particularly funny. Tho document, being painted instead of tattooed, is naturally perishable, and the antics of the young artist and his sufferings while engaged in the persistent effort to prevent himself from being rubbed or touched upon the back are excessively amusing. There is another thing that at first blush appears to be a plagiarism. That is the hypnotic influence exercised by a sleight of hand artist over his very bulky wife, whom he is enabled by his hypnotic power to convert into a Rachel or a Melba at will. In reality in neither of the cases is there plagiarism. Each is burlesaued so aelightfully that our very familiarity witn the works from which tho scenes are taken tends rather to increase the enjoyment. To be perfectly conservative, there seems to be no reason why The Marquis of Michigan, with a strong cast, which, by the way, cannot by any stretch of the imagination bo said to be in evidence now, should not Drove one of the great hits of WAISTS and ROUGH FAMILY DRY TO US,' Tis TROY STEAM LAUNDRY, Best on Earn. 66 riAN STREET, If You Want to Keep SAM BERNARD. Tho names of his characters aro or themselves funny enough to bring many a laugh before the rise of the curtain. These are some of them: Lyon Hart, a retired commodore of tho United States navy; Marble Ilart, Savago Noyes, Handel Schwein, N. Gago Chips, Will Hammer, Dewing Munkittrick, Iona Brougham, Fay Kerr, Rhoda Race, Lura Mann, Sue Brett, Servus Wright ami Ada Marr. The Adventures of Lady Ursula" is tho play with which E. H. Sothcrn and his wife, Virginia Darned, opened their regular annual engagement at the Lyceum theater, this city. The piece has been played out of town, and all reports have agreed in saying that it is one of the best vehicles in which the Sotherns have ever appeared. Tho rather critical first night audience at the Lyceum was evidently of the same opinion, for the applause was exceptionally liberal. Miss Darned is enabled in The Adventures of Lady Ursula" to don male attire and go forth in search of adventure. She is generally conceded to have made as great a hit as her talented husband, and I have heard that when Sotherns next piece is ready for production tho former may bo 6ent on the road as a star in "Ursula. Still, from present indications, the artistic separation of the talented couple will not occur very soon, as tho Lyceums attraction is likely to last throughout tho term of Mr. Sotherns engagement at that house if there are no contracts in existence providing for the exploitation of some other play there this season by that gentleman.
