And another Special Event is going to happen this weekend, (Labor Day Weekend, Sept. 3-6, there are a lot of people who are patiently waiting for the town to fill up with motorcycles,' campers and cars with bumper stickers that say Beaver or Bust! There are banners and signs up saying Welcome Friends of Bill W. What is all that about? And who in the world is Bill W.?? They are just signs but they have a very special meaning! It is a way to welcome RECOVERING members of Alcoholics Anonymous. Bill W. was one of the Co-Founders of AA., a 12 step program. I remember when I moved to Beaver and saw all of these signs and people in town. I too wondered what was going on. I asked my neighbor lady. She said there was a gang of drunks who invaded our town. Pretty scary! She said, "Lock your doors!!" Boy was she wrong! I later found out the Real Story. Thirty-four years ago a small group of Recovering Alcoholics, pooling their resources, made a pre-arranged overnight stay at a campground east of Beaver. They were headed to an International Convention in Denver, Colorado. They found the people in our town so accommodating and friendly they decided to return the following year. They sat around campfires and shared their stories of recovery. The next year they would tell friends in Recovery and they joined in. Saving their money to return. It started our a poor mans campvention, tents, sleeping bags and sharing food, Fish fries and potlucks. Just a I Care,.I Share week-end. It grew, one year they had over 1,000 in attendance. There was a lot of talent so they put together a talent show. Later introducing the fun group of "Boozeville Boomers" that entertain us every year It's like the show "Build It & They Will Come!" Committees were formed. Everyone became "Busy Beavers". There wee Marathon meetings going 24 hours. AA Couples meetings, speakers were asked to share their stories, H & I meetings, soft ball games, nature hikes, fishing derbys, a dance and this year featuring our local band "Loose Connections." There is a golf tournament, 50-50 tickets and Tshirts are" sold. Don't forget the ever popular Ms Beaver cutest, part of our talent show with guys who are Bold & Beautiful wear dresses, wigs, high heels, trying to win the title of Ms Beaver. So if this sounds like fun and you want to learn more about alcoholism, dress warm and bring your chair. Registration is only $12.00. So sign up to come join in. It's the Great Beaver Outdoor Meeting at the race track east of town. But You Had Better Watch Out!! It's addicting and you might have to keep coming back!! It's a family affair and you are asked to supervise your children. "Sorry, No Dogs!" The ceremony was held at Kingsbury Hall, on the University of Utah campus in Salt Lake City. It was a "White Coat" Ceremony, held for all students entering their first year of medical school. The White Coat Ceremony creates an important focus for students entering medical school. In the presence of family, friends and faculty members, student physicians are welcomed into the medical community and are "cloaked" with their first white coats. The class members and physicians present also stand to recite the Oath of Hippocrates. Through their involvement in this meaningful ritual at the beginning of medical school, student physicians become more aware 6f their professional responsibilities. The ceremony impresses upon them the primacy of the doctor-patient relationship. It also encourages them to accept the obligations inherent in the practice of medicine; to be excellent in science, compassionate, and lead lives of uprightness and honor. It emphasizes for students the physician's responsibility to take care of patients aid also to care for patients. The message conveyed is' that physicians should care as well as cure. On Monday, August 31st, 2009 there were 366 inmates housed in Beaver County Jail. Home Country Slim Randies Katie Burchell pulled over to the side of the road and put the car in neutral for a minute while she watched the young man ride down the street. Randall Jones. Coming back from Marcia's alleyway again. Are all boys that dumb, or was Randy special? She watched him ride, proud of how he sat so straight. Katie always rode straight in the saddle, too, but there's no way Randy would ever notice. He rode on by and smiled and waved at her, but she could see the hurt behind the smile. She returned the smile and wave and drove home. If Randy Jones could feel that way about me ... she thought... but Marcia was, well, beautiful. Katie was ... pleasant? Okay? Hey, at least Km ... kind? Yep. Kind and nice. "Randy Jones again?" Mrs. Burchell said. "What, Mom?" "You look so sad." "I wish there was something I could do, that's alt." "Well, there isn't. It's up to the guy, isn't it, Dear?" "Still, it seems like ..." Katie's dad twitched his head for her to follow htm into the den. He pointed to a chair. "Why do you like this guy, Honey?" "He's nice to animals, he's kind to people, he ... likes horses. He's devoted ..." "To the Fleming girl, right?" "Right. No way I can compete with that." • Boys Golf By Kali Lyn Gillies Sweat tiptoed its way down the boys' necks as they carefully selected their targets and made their best shots. It was life or death. Well, maybe not, but pretty close! The Beaver Golfers beat Millard on the Eagles' course by 23 shots: Dallon Murdock and Braxton Williams shot 75, Hunter Hansen shot 79, and Aaron Yardley shot 82 in the fourth straight win for the Beavers! "Ever tried? Hey, my daughter can dq anything." - "What do you mean?" "Does he know how you feel about him?" "Of course not." "Why not?" "You mean ... tell him? Just like that?" "Why not? Some guys need a little ... nudge ..." Katie hugged her dad and went to put on some makeup and change her shirt. Outside the sky was clear, settling in toward sunset. The | day looked ... special. Suddenly '• she was in a nudging mood. !" Brought to you by "Sun Dog [ Days," by Slim Randies, now', available at 'www. unmpress. com. Comments or Ideas? Contact Us! I. * w P.O.
