Letter To The Editor: While enjoying the 24th of July parade, I was shocked at the actions of Chief George Humphreys, Beaver Fire District 1, who thoroughly soaked three elderly people next to me that couldn't move fast enough to get out of his line of fire. It's one thing to blast the water in the middle of the street and let the "willing" ones get drenched, but when you start blasting the "unwilling" ones, with extremely cold water, that's appalling. It's a good thing the Paramedics' weren't far away!-.T, " sChyrisse Gardner Aird G. Merkley Family Reunion The Aird G. and Merle B. Back" by: Mildred Yardley The old time Band and Orchestras held an important part in all the little towns of Utah. They were expected to play on all public occasions, mostly without pay. If one of the fiddlers was not available, other musicians would fill in, like an accordionist, even a "comb player." They knew that music could soothe the cares of the day If you were a drummer it had its advantages. It was the custom for listeners to throw coins on the heads of the drums while they were playing. The early settlers loved to dance and the musicians were always willing to provide music when it was needed. Any kind of dance was better than none. Sometimes they would receive a gallon of molasses for their services. The old time Band loved to march in the parades to show off their uniforms. Beavers old time Band con- sisted of George Woodhouse who played the cornet. He later had his son Tony Woodhouse join with .his horn. There was John Grimshaw, Jimmy Crompton, and Joe Bakes, all local citizens and maybe others. remember seeing a picture taken on the old Opera House steps of the group. Ryan is the son of Joe and Marianne White. A Tribute To Val Smith his interest and talent in communications with at Wallace Dean the BHS Radio Station, KBCS. This valuable a basis for later summer employment at KDXU as served training St. Radio, George, Utah in 1962, and at KSUB Radio, Cedar City, Utah for two and a half years during his college days. At age 1 7, Mrs. Louise Farrer asked Val to make an announce ment over Ken Ward's system. This was his first announcing job and after that he had to have the system. In 1 971 the present sound equipment was purchased from Ken Ward. Val agreed to leave the Ward name on the bells for one year then the system became Smith Sound. The four large bell horns are the originals with the exception of new smaller drivers. This system and "the guy in the black truck" are familiar to Beaver County and many of the surrounding areas of Southern Utah. He has traveled to Fillmore, Parowan, Cedar City, and Panguitch to participate in events in the area. Recently the system was used at a girls camp held at Tropic Reservoir. The business is seasonal being used more during the summer months and holidays. Val is always willing to supply his system in order that others might hear better and enjoy more. He looks forward to participating in the annual Christmas in the Country Light Parade held in Parowan each November, where his time and efforts are donated, as are most of his sound jobs. Being very caught up with the Christmas excitement this year, he forgot to remove his horns and drove under the carport, "crunching" them. They were soon repaired and painted, looking good as new. The last few years he has felt a need for more announcing stations for the 24th of July parade. Many hours were spent preparing new cables and stations. He begins the day at 7 a m. setting up equipment and runs as fast as he can ending the day with fire works hoping to make the day enjoyable for all, sometimes having Caroline or Andrea run one system while he is elsewhere with another. July 4th, 1999 was the first parade he has missed in 28 years. Arrangements had been made months in advance for a substitute to run the system, when complications arose and plans fell through, his family refused to let him cancel his plane ticket to North Carolina He. needed a vacation too!!! He often narrates for various programs. He narrated a slide presentation designed for the LDS Visitors Center located at the City Park in 1972. Val is also the original sponsor and coordinator of the Sheriffs Search and Rescue Bicycle Races. He is very proud of his association with the Beaver Sheriffs Search and Rescue Unit.
