In Beaver-187- 3 Production The Beaver's Birthday production of Beaver-187- 3 was pronounced a huge success by all citizens involved. Large, enthusiastic audiences on both nights of the musical play responded with cheers and applause. The presentation, an original work by Beaver native, Florence Woodhouse Hartley was well received by audiences comprised of all age groups. The authentic plot covers an historical period in Beaver's history when federal army troops arrived in the area to maintain peace between citizens and Indians and to be available from the central location of Beaver to move in any direction. Peaceful citizens of Beaver were somewhat apprehensive at the changes taking place in their . area. Through Hartley's creative handling, the tale evolved through story, song, and dance. From the first song, "A Farmers Day" to the last finale the audience delighted in the beauty of the melodies and the authenticity of the subject matter. An example might be "The Meadow Lark's Song" taken from the line "Beaver is a pretty little place" sung by that golden bird of the field early in every spring and handed from grandmother to mother to child through the years. Men particularly enjoyed Published in The Beaver Press the "Utah Cowboy" song which February 12, 1998. brought clapping accompaniment and cheers on the second night. Arthritis Foundation Kicks Off 50th Anniversary Observance After being organized in Parowan, a selected group of families on wagons and horses crossed Buckhorn Flat, climbed past Fremont Canyon on up over the Ridge and reached the Beaver River to establish a townsite. That was in early February of 1856. The weather that year was "constant winds and severe blizzards" yet in those conditions the purposeful with in pioneers, origins England and Northern Europe , defied the bitter cold and started building their homes in what is now the south end of Beaver City. The first logs were cut on February 6th, making that the official "birthday" of the towns beginnings. This year, with nicer weather, Beaver celebrated its 142nd birthday for three highly enter- taining evenings. The musical score was provided a pleasant showcase for many outstanding local singers. Beaver has always produced splendid musical talent and the cast of "1 873" was no exception. With over 40 voices, the songs by the entire company were quite thrilling. The male lead, a farmboy, was handled admirably by Douglas Riley. The character was not atypical hero. He was sympathetic to race relations, odd for those days, and, even odder, he was environmentally aware. Enough so to sing about his worries for the field mice who were scattered by the farmers plows. Mr. Riley delivered his numbers in a fine, soft tenor voice. The sets by Shirley Howard and LaVar Atkin were minimal but effective. Most of the furniture was period-lik- e and the costumes on the Indians were grand. The shows cast included real Native Americans. That was a nice touch but when they delivered a line it sounded very Hollywood: "Indian grab-ugun and shoot-urnetc. Only 1940's movie redskins talk that way. but that is a minor detail.
