Goshutes -Dwellers of the Great Basin According to the Utah it is History Encyclopedia, unknown how the long Goshutes have occupied the area of western Utah, however a date of 1 ,000 years ago is the time when the probable Shoshonean speaking people entered the Great Basin. At the time the Mormons entered the Salt Lake Valley the Goshutes lived in the desert regions southwest of the Great Salt Lake. Theirs was a culture considered to be the most simple of all the tribes that occupied the area. Although they lived at a minimal subsistence level, the Goshutes had an extensive and effective knowledge of the growing cycles, variations of the seasons and climate, and animal life. They hunted and gathered in small family groups and shared any surplus with their vi- 65-1-- llage. Although some Goshutes were supplied to the slave trade, it was not until 1826 with the passing of a party led by Jedediah Smith that contact with Europeans was first documented. However, it wasn't until the arrival of the Mormons in 1847 that the Goshutes came into continual contact with whites. With the advent of Pony Express, the Overland Stage and the transcontinental railroad running through Goshute territory, other immigrants, settlers -and government agents arrive on their land. In the fragile envi- -' ronment of the desert, these new occupants disrupted the balanced lives of the Goshutes, and they responded by trying to drive the setters away. The settlers and the United States Army counterattacked, forcing the Goshutes to sign a treaty in 1863. With the Goshutes' many treaty concessions, the majority abandoned much of their tradition and settled down on farms in the area. Attempts by the government to relocate the Goshutes to other Indian reservations failed, and finally after many harsh decades, two reservations were established at the base of the Deep Creek Mountains and in Skull Valley. The Utah Pioneer Sesquicentennial Celebration Coordinating Council is encouraging cultural awareness during this year of celebration by promoting ethnic and cultural events on the master events calendar and honoring the contributions of Utah's many cultures, For more information about how to get involved or for a calendar of sesquicentennial 3 or see our events, call Internet at site www.history.state.ut.ussesqui. 533-351- sons to the following offices: Mayor City Council Member (2) Filing forms are available at the Beaver City Offices, 60 West Center, Beaver, Utah. Bridger, Wyoming, at 2:35 p.m. July 10th, 1997. Henry's parents, Dana and Cliff Bentley of West Jordan City, Utah, decided to make history by joining the ' pioneer company Jong enough to give birth to their baby. Fortunately, the pioneer company happened to be camped at Fort Bridger for the day. Henry's birth in the pioneer company, was the answer to Shauna Dicken's prayers. of Shauna,. Plymouth, Washington, is a of Patty Sessions, the famous pioneer midwife. As a tribute to the babies bom on the trail and the midwives who delivered them, Shauna had been praying fervently for someone to have their baby during the trek. Shauna got the word out to in Utah. When Dana Bentley was approached by her midwife to have her baby on the trail, she was not really interested. But she felt that her baby wanted to be bom on the trail. Four midwives accompanied Dianne the Bentleys Bjamson and Deborah Aaron of Pleasant Grove, Gwen Smith of and Lisa Taylorsville Orem. of Heimberger When they arrived at the pioneer camp, the midwives immediately set up things inside Shauna Dicksen's tent. Within 30 minutes, Henry was bom and he was heartily greeted by all. He was 8 lbs. and 4 oz. and 21 14" inches longi Dana and Cliff Bentley said they feel that it was an uplifting experience. Dana said that it was the best birth; she had ever had. She said she appreciates the pioneer mothers. "They had to immediately get back on the trail, whereas I was able to go home and take a shower." ; The midwives who helped :: relive history are all from the Utah School of Midwifery in Springville, Utah. Attention I being a sportsman of area Demolition Derby's, I Feel I deserve an answer for the cancellation of the 6th annual derby on the 24th celebration in Beaver. The fairgrounds are accessible for use by all Beaver County Residents and shouldn't be dictated by one organization. high-volta- high-volta- 438-245- 1. Attention We were wondering why the Derby's in Beaver County have been canceled. After many man hours, hard work, and monies provided through a grant for Beaver County residents, we finally got started with another form of community entertainment. We were to understand it was our County's goal to bring our families and community together. Now because of some reason unknown, or is it?, we are now being denied this opportunity and right, and were just looking for an answer. Thank you. Beaver City has placed signs, "DANGER -KEEP OUr or "WARNING -HIGH VOLTAGE." on substation fences for your protection. Make sure your child stands this fact. If your child is somewhat older, he or she may ask plenty of questions about the dangers If a more detailed involved. answer will help get the message across, here is a simple explanation that should help your child respect a substation and the power of electfence ricity. The electrical substation changes the extremely high voltage carried by the transmission lines into the lower distribution voltage that serves homes and businesses. In order to perform this task, the substation needs a direct feed from the transmission line into the substation structure. The equipment within the substation is always under electrical load. Substation technicians, coop linemen and maintenance crews are trained to work in situations and to recognize and avoid potential hazards in the substation. Just how high is the electric voltage? Some of the pieces of equipment in the substation equipment could be energized at more than 100,000 volts. Remember: Substation fences mark the danger zone for you. You are safe if you stay away from them. UAMPS and Beaver City want your children to be safe. If you have any questions on the location of substations in your community,, please call Beaver City at SVT 1 think that .... We all know that children love to climb up, on and over things.
