Early blossoming fruit trees were in bloom in southern sections but not yet out in the northern areas the first week in April. Fall planted grains were growing but signs of erision appeared on slopes where winter snows has melted too rapidly. Matheson urged Utah residents "to become better informed of the hazards and remedies for air pollution." The event, sponsored locally by. , the Utah Lung Association, is held annually by the American Lung Association and affiliated organizations throughout the United States. Its purpose is to promote awareness of how polluted air injures lungs and how individuals can aid in combating this threat to health. The week's activities will focus on the chief contributor to the air gasoline-burnin- g pullution problem-t- he motor vehicle. Although harmful auto emissions are primarily a Wasatch Front problem, pollutants spewing into the air there can travel many miles to affect neighboring communities. ULA officials hope rural residents will act now to conserve their clean air and prevent future degradation. Gov. Matheson's declaration said, "the air we breathe belongs to all our citizens and the quality of the environment affects the of everyhealth and one." It continued, "the success of efforts to maintain air quality standards depends on the awareness and cooperation of all our citizens...! urge individuals, business and industrial leaders, organizations and government agencies concerned with a healthy environment to pledge themselves to more effective action for clean air for ourselves and future generations." well-bein- g According to the Lung Association, auto emissions monitored along the Wasatch Front have violated the air quality standard established to protect human health numerous times last year. For example, carbon monoxide level 50 exceeded the safe times in Salt Lake City and three times in Bountiful. Ozone levels violated the primary standard 178 times in Bountiful. In Salt Lake it was measured for only six months during the low season, but even so, exceeded the standard 54 times. Dirty air can break down the lungs' defenses. It can make them more susceptible to influenza, pneumonia and colds. It can contribute to chronic bronchitis. It poses a special threat to people who already have respiratory conditions or heart ailments, children and the elderly. The health costs of air pollution alone-- - not counting the costs to property and vegetation - are estimated at well over $10 billion per year in the U.S. The governor also commended the Utah Lung Association for its sponsorship of Clean Air Week and its persistent efforts to assure a healthier environment as a keystone in its continuing program to prevent and control lung disease. star's double 9.
