Christiansen Beaver, Utah Dear Robert, Your letter of the 15th has been discussed with council members and police officers wtio were involved in the April 13th incident at the airport. It is felt by all concerned that comment should be made to the statements made in your letter. Your first sjtbtement concerns "more and varied types of recreational programs in our area", and the second states, "Beeaver City has not fulfilled its obligation to its citizens in this area of endeaofficials, vor." Governing church and school authorities and local service organiza tions have realized our youth must be kept active through proorganized recreational jects. Through mutual coopera tion, and combined with our u natural invironment, our citizens, as well as citizens of any age group, can find a host of recreational activities in and around Beaver. Some of them are: the Little organized League program, baseball for older youth in an exceEent, lighted ball park, three gymnasiums available to the public, outdoor winter sports, swimming in a heated pool, golfing, fishing and hunt ing, camping and other forms of Tecreatdon to be enjoyed in our mountains. There is also boating and water skiing, school sports and social activities and the many recreations offered by our churches. It would appear that all people Beaver involved, including City, have made good progress in providing recreational interests for our citizens. The third statement says there is a great deal of interest, by peeople of all ages, in drag racing. It is quite possible there is considerable interest dn this sport, and legal and proper pursuits should be followed to further its cause. Fourth, that the youth of cur community ihave little respect for law officers, and the Beaver City fifth, that council has failed to upgrade the police department. These statements are so erroneous they can hardly be taken seriously .The Beaver City police If your old car is too "sprung" for this spring- - you-thif- Don't waste another day or dollar on "ren hack! There have been no charges of murder, assault, rape or armed robbery such as is prevdant in many cities, and there is very little vandalism. This record is hardly what would be expected of a degraded and disrespected police v nartment. To quote the sixth statement: "that police officers Tiade unlawful threats upon the rights of citizens such as unlawful search of motor vehicles. This type of action is very degrading to a police officer and tends to degrade citizens respect for law enforcement.'' It is not cur position to debate points of law, but for your information, a police officer may search any automcbile suspected of carrying contraband or any illegal commodity at any time during routine investigation. If is ob served that this search result ed in six citations being issued for illegal possession. We cannot be convinced that this is degrading to a police officer, nor to citizens respect for law enforcement; not even the citizens who received the citations. We fail to understand how any adult person working with youth could openly defy and disregard law and authority, and encourage these young people to ds so.
