Show THE BEAVER PRESS Page Four Beaver Church Guide & SONS' FATHER A SUCCESS BANQUET Friday evening, Nov. 3, at 6:30 p.m., fathers and sons sat down to a very special banquet. Places were set for 150, but soon extra tables were needed to accomodate the crowd. The Master of Ceremonies was Billy Baker. Richard Swindlehurst gave a talk, and Billy Baker, John Kerksiek, and Richard Carter sang a song. Pat Yard-le- y and Michael Farnsworth gave the prayers. The meal was served by members of the Ward Relief Society. Proceeds will help with the Scout Fund. Much credit is due Brother Evan Patterson, who is leader of the explorers. Tickets were made by the boys, as were all detuiauons, menu, ticket sales and plans. Evan seems to have a way with boys that gets things accomplished. Following the supper, a dance was held. The Explorer group selected, by vote, Deanna Stapley as the Beaver 3rd Ward Explorer Queen. Richard Baldwin and David Ross were awar ded Life Scout Badges. Billy Baker received a Star Badge. The evening was wonderful, and members of the Ward should be proud of the leadership given our boys by: Hal Peterson, Cub Scouts; Sherman Carter and Sheldon Jessup, Scouts: Evan Patterson and Sam Patterson, Explorers. During the 1918 - 1919 oandemic, there were in the world probably 200 million cases and more than 10 million deaths in less than 12 months. Ten per cent of the cases were in the 0 United States, and about deaths occurred here in less than six months. Utah's new Director of Public Health, G. D. Carlyle Thompson ,M. D., noting that national to the high risk warnings groups last year went generally unheeded, says: "Relatives and friends of the chronically ill, of pregnant women and of all those over 65, should insist that those vulnerable ones be immunized immediately, either by inoculations or boosters. An epidemic of influenza is overdue it may come this fall and winter. We cannot afford to risk the valuable lives of those we NEED NOT DIE from influenza induced causes between November and March if they are vaccinated NOW, IN OCTOBER. The vaccine is, probably, of no value after influenza is contracted. It must be taken before the months of danger. It should be taken NOW, IN OCTOBER. The shot you took last year will not protect you this year booster, you need an annual early each fall. (If you have not had a first immunization, two shots with and interval between, are required the first year). What is influenza? Until recent years, we had to make do with such practical but inexact definitions as: "an apparently sudden disturbance of the pub lic health by the occurrence of a very large number of cases of illness characterized as regards a majority by signs and symptoms affecting the respiratory tract." But modern science has established that influenza i s caused by an identifiable virus and, while the symptoms may seem the same as those of the common cold and other respiratory infections, the virus can be identified positively in the laboratory. As nearly everyone now knows, influenza symptoms include an abrupt onset of chills, fever, headache, muscular pain, prostration, cough and nasal discharge, lasting one to six days, usually two to three. Influenza seldom results in death to young and normally healthy people, but is fatal, as a complication, to many of fall ages with chronic chest and heart ailments and to pregnant women and senior citizens. Hence, the urgent need for annual immunization of all those in these special groups. Influenza is probobly as old as man and joins bubonic plague and smallpox as the suspected biblical and early plagues of The Europe and the first authentic outbreak was described in 1510 and since then, aside from the frequent, cyclic epidemics, pandemic or worldwide epidemics have swept the globe about four times each -- 3,!23 On Wednesday evening, the Cubs held their Pack meeting it the church.
